Sway Bars


Has anyone got ome inf on rear sway bas for my 71 bug. Its got IRS, and i wanna make it handel really well before i go lower and get rims.

Ive seen a few in the us but i dont wanna ship them out. Would love it if somewhere in sydney had them, preferably southern sydney.

Do they make a big difference of should i look somewhere else to make the rear end stick.

wider rims and good tyres first..

If your rear is letting go first then fit a larger front bar.

Ball joint beam front end but it was an autostick so its got discs and irs rear end.

That's a great set-up -- same as '76.
Brutus has got added anti-roll bars front and rear. I didn't think rear bars were necessary with 4 joint rear, but it really does seem to help. I now wonder if it may be more important to have it on the rear than the front...! Maybe you have a standard front bar already? (I do note that the experts are saying to upgrade the front FIRST.)
If you reduce body roll, you must also widen the tires at least slightly, or the car may tend to slide MORE! Your first post suggests you have rear end breaking free "issues". This seems surprising - even with standard tires it shouldn't be too tail happy - is there any obvious/other reason for breaking free?

Its got a stock front bar on it. The only other reason for the looseness is comin into corners to quick. But my rear tires are a bit wider about 200. But it is weird i will turn the corner and have understeer and then once the body starts to roll it has oversteer. Then it settles down and im back ready for the next turn

I'm working on a custom rear sway bar using the front super sway bar, but so far it's untouched lol.

Rear engine/Rear wheel drive

these cars were never built to handle corners well from the factory, you really gotta throw some $$ at them if you want good handeling

doesnt takes, but its a combination of stock setup thats making it so

stock ride height, stock rims and tyres, 39 year old front swaybar no rear, and what are your shocks like?

wider rubber and lower profile tyres is a good start, but u need wider rims to put them on

Josh. I'm not the biggest expert, but if I were you, this is what I would be doing... It should just make for a nicer drive and make you feel more confident in stopping. The order in which I suggest these things of improvement are not a must or how to... Just suggestions. As I always here from Joel, saftey/breaking/handling before power :)


Here goes:

Lowered/narrowed front beam. Ring/message mick058 and discuss if his could work for you.
Service or upgrade front brakes.. New pads/machine discs etc.
Front bushes and tie rod ends (if needed) :)
sway bar (micks may match the beam...)
wheel allignment.

This should give you a nice front end that handles well..... And would be great for supersprint.

For the rear..
Lower the rear to the stance you want.. Use new bushes when lowering.
Service rear brakes/ upgrade to type 3 drums/ disc brake kit (Sherman kit is $880 FYI)
decent rear shocks
squareback torsion bars
kafer bar setup

And then, wider wheels and some good tyres.

Racing is not cheap..

Um no it wouldn't.

Narrowed beams are useless for racing or to help a car handle for going around corners.

Ive already pm med Mick bout his and got it sorted, im only using it to lower the front down to the right height that i want.

to fit my wider wheels and tyres i will need new brakes so that will be sorted too.

Tie rod ends etc all got done for pink slip last week

I have a front sway bar and if not will buy one for the new beam.

As for the rear.

Its pretty much at the height i want to to be.

Will do rear bushings as not sure when they were done last.

Same with the rear brakes ill need new ones to fit the wider rims.

What would square back torsion bars do for mew in corners?

And a Kafer bar is on the list once i get all this done. But im really only asking because i found the guy who does swaybars in town so i thought might be a good upgrade.

Id suggest getting your ride height sorted where you want it, freshen up any worn bushes etc and get a good (stress the GOOD part, not a toe n go. I used east coast suspension in kirrawee) wheel alignment as a starting point before you go adding sway bars. If you dont have decent shocks again upgrade these before the bars. You may need sway bars but they should be the last thing you add just to trim the car.

My only suggestion wound be to purchase the following book and use it as a reference ,educate yourself and understand how the idiosyncratic vw suspension works and then modify the suspension to suit your needs.
