Stock standard Carb or High Performance Aftermarket?
Hi Everyone, hope all are having fun with your projects.
Recently my carb out of my 1500 beetle, pretty much decided to die.(How could it!! it was only 40years old ) Anyway,it is beyond a carbie kit,so will need a new one.
Was thinking of just purchasing a stock standard one and be done with it.But then got some suggestions to maybe go to an Aftermarket Performance Carb
Like Holley for eg.Now im not sure,if they fit Vee-dubs and i dont know if there are any other major brands/Company's that produce such carbs.Do they
improve performance? Are they a pro or a con? I believe they would also get rid of your oil bath filter, which i know is not recommended.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance. Jas.

No No No No No.
Phone a VW workshop near you and ask for a nice 30 PICT carb - they should stock reco'd ones. Bolt it on together with your stock VW air cleaner and
hoses, adjust the carb as per your VW workshop manual, and be happy.

Yes yes yes.
a set of icts, fdr's or k dogs would liven that single port up quite nicely. You will have to lose that stock exhaust for a header set up and be
prepaired to tinker for a few weeks/months dialing them right in. But they are so fun on a stock motor, you will be learning how to rebuild an engine
in no time.

stock works best but there is performance gains to be had by upgrading
theyre naturally under carbed and over exhausted so you can give them shit all day and not hurt them
more so on the old single port motors but its mainly to give good economy and long life
you can pickup a good 30-40% power on a 1600 just with twin carbs, decent header and ratio rockers
but they often take a fair bit of tuning to get running nice and smooth
forget the old holleys though, they are litterally cast iron paperweights

thanks joel,i dont know much about tuning that type of stuff, nor do i have the money atm for a performance upgrade so it will most likely be a
stock new carb.It will make a major difference to my current situation. Is there any setup, where i can buy to carbs wack one on each end link them to
the accelerator cable, and drive away.Or does that involve more tuning.I would like to go that way at some stage, but am yet to find a good deal. They
are quite expensive.(in my view).
Thanks.

Don't worry about trying different carbs. Just get a good second-hand 30-PICT for a VW 1500 from a VW workshop and bolt it on - it was designed for
your car. Any VW workshop manual will tell you how to adjust it; there's only the throttle stop, mixture and volume screws to play with.

I agree with everyone.
If you want to stay single carb, just have the stock solex
I've tried Progressive weber : it's okay in a straight line but tends to cough when turning
currently having a 1 3/4 SU which is ok but it's so hard to find the right needle
to me, they're just a bit easier to tune after some small mods.
both of which ices up and runs like pig when the engine is cold
(I'm working on electric heater).
oh and they have tendancy to over-run shut off
cheers

Yes agreed... a lot of Money..IMHO...
I am running a WEBER brasillian carby made for twin port beetles..
Its excellent...
as I didn't have a solex [that wasn't gummed up from old fuel] to test first, I have no idea whether they are any better than a Solex carby...
I'm very happy with it...
Lucky My Son found it somewhere... lol
LEE
PS: Don't see too many SUs on VWs in Australia...
more so in the UK... where they were common on many cars
also a much simpler carby... You can get electric blankets for heater manifolds in the UK... and maybe in the US..?? Lee

Keep the oil bath with a single carburetor...

Why are You saying Your old carby is worn out???
are the shafts worn or the housing worn??
I always keep My Carby shafts oiled...

Yes, and the crankcase breather needs to be re-route somewhere.
Those pod filter like breather u can get for $15 from SCA works well for a short while before it gets oiled up and stop breathing. and then the u get
oil coming out of front pulley. (that and I do have the massive blow-by from the good old heads)
@Lee
I got the carby for a bargain and my mate agreed to make the stainless steel flange after I found him an old $20 7M-GE.
I was thinking of using NiChrome wire with heat sleeve over it as an insulator. I saw something like that on the first few pages of VWMA ads
