Lee, About 20 years ago I drove a Beetle with CB running gear for a week. The car was being prepared for a charity rally and I think it competed and finished reasonably well.
The thing I recall was the ability to get the rear of the Beetle to lift what must have been 12 inches every time you took off. The rise and fall was even more evident than in a normal CB and you needed to be sure not to snap the spring plates. The car handled like a bucket of wet custard of the road and it was impossible to turn a right handed corner without the tyres rubbing incessantly against the body.
I agree- who would want to but it was fun.

best bet would be to buy it, sell the body, and put one of those cbs running on a bug pan back home on its original sort.

Its unbelievable how many cb's u see with bug pans instead.

Scarey Phil....

I agree Chris...
on a CB OK...

there were two Beetles on Kubelwagen chassis at the VW nationals...

My Son said He thought one of them came from Switzerland..?? same fellow owned both I think...

but.. they looked great... chassis probably similar to a CB..
with a split window beetle body....

lol, i would luv to have a chance. i neva even sat in a cb before :). i rekon they are sweet.

I just see so many of the baja boys put the strengthened front ends and reduction boxes in the spot light, and from shear observation seems to be 'the go'.
If we are talking original offroad intentions. :tu:

is it as good as they say? or am i mislead :(

What made them handle like a dog on the street?

You can pretty well compare CB handling and performance to splittie...most of the splitty owners go for ball joint beam, IRS, disk brakes , even rack and pinion ...for very much the same reason...
If offroading is your primary aim, by all means, keep it original...

VWJon,

The photo is a replica Kommanderwagen made up of a modified oval Beetle with a split window cut inserted that is sitting on a CB pan and running gear. It has a 36HP motor if I recall it correctly. I believe the owner in outer Perth still has the vehicle but I have not heard from him for some years now. He is into Military vehicles generally.

I think the real giveawy of the vehicle is the Oval dash and not a split beetle one.
I would still like it sitting in my garage though.
