solex 34 pict 4
hey all, my 1976 bug has a solex 34 pict 4 carbie in it, im a complete newbie & just starting a semi resto on her, was hoping for some info on
what to do, replace or restore? also if replace what is a replacement for it?any other bits of info on 1600 would be great too.. remember i know very
little! also dont have alot of $$$ but would love to have her as daily driver!! thanks!

the 34 pict4 is OK as a carburetor..
but naturally a new carby would be better if Your is worn...
check where rods go into the carby for wear...
You should n't be able to move the rod up & down or sideways etc..
these moving parts should always be oiled...lubricated..
I do mine all the time... one drop of oil on anything moving..
all these things used to done when a beetle was serviced in the 50s & 60s & 70s..
make sure the spring on the carby isn't too strong as this will increase the wear.. dramatically..
not sure whether You can get the bushes in the carby renewed locally... I know they do it in the USA..
Firstly, I recommend You getting some VW manuals...
You cannot have too many..
check out 2nd hand shops and ebay...
I have 10 or more and have read them all... lol
one book many people like is the late john Muirs VW manual for the compleat idiot .. its very down to earth, for the newcomer.. and explains just
about everything...
all the books are different, so make sure you buy a few...
used ones are OK... lol
You can buy used VW books very cheap from amazon.com in the USA, but You need to check on the cost of postage..

If the original carb is working ok without flatspots(which will be unusual) stick with it,if it is playing up it may only need a kit and adjustment or
if you want to replace it the 31pict with an adaptor is also available as a replacement.From previous experience some of the new carbs are fairly
average,

Brasillian or even chinese?? solex replicas are about...
better to keep Yours.. if You can...
many people have had to strip their new carby down as its full of filings and bits of alloy from the machining..
I run a weber carby that was sold to replace the solex 34pict4
on a twin port engine...
I 'm not sure whether they are still available??
