Hi Bugzla
Nice job on your car, did the wheels rub on the lip on the mudguard, the wheels on my convertable on the previous page are a 6' x 16" with a ET of 50mm, with this set up you loose 34mm clearence on the suspension and loose 4 mm mudguard clearence , i could only use a 195/55/16" toyo maxium, if you use a 7' x 17' rim with a ET of 40mm you loose 37mm clearence on the suspension and the outside of the rim moves 27mm towards the mudguard lip, that is 24mm increase over my car, all of the diamentions are compaired to the standard wheel fittment, you can check any wheel fitment on the offset calculator below.
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
I removed the wheel and fitted a 3mm spacer and the tyre then would rub under braking and cornering, taking into account that my car has a 195 tyre and the smallest tyre available for the 17" rim is a 205 there would be a major problem in getting a 17" wheel to work under the standard guard successfully it's more than just not bolting them on.
