interchangeable brake parts
hi, will late 4 stud type 3 rear brakes , that is shoes cylinders backing plates etc fit a early type1 and also accept the early wide 5 type 3 drums.

I know for a fact that the late type 3 backing plates and the like are almost identical to the early beetle jobs and bolt straight up along with the
slave cyl position and handbrake cables. Also, the early wide five drums will fit the later backing plates/shoes from everything I've heard. However,
you will find the mounting hubs/drums are too long for the shorter early beetle swing axles. Two ways to fix this. Machine the snout of the drums/hubs
(about 20mm, if memory serves me correctly) which is what I did, or get a set of the longer type 3 axles. I have the feeling that the longer type 3
axles are the same as the later beetle swing axles but don't quote me on that. You'll need to measure a set up or test fit them to check.

thanks pete, when u machined off the snout was there stil plenty of spline left on the drum

Yes.
The later type 3 drums are a larger diameter than early beetle.
Some early type 3's had a wide shoe, but same diameter as beetle, so just doube check what you have.

ok thanks dave n pete, obviously the later type 3 is the best setup with more diameter/width brakes. is there a way to use that setup and utilise the
wide 5 pattern. like drill n tap w5 pattern. thanks greg

what i think we've been saying is, if you get the later backing plates, the larger wide 5 drum should fit it.

hi pete, from wot i read correct me if im wrong, the later diameter is diff from the earlier drums, so maybe the earlier wide five drums wouldnt fit.
so i have to drill n tap the later ones.

The last of the wide five type 3 drums are the same diameter as the 4-stud type 3 drums, so they bolt on.
You can still buy new wide five type 3 drums,
but unless they are German, the consensis is that "used" may be best.
The only mods would be if you have early short axles
which will require the snout to be shortened.
