non vw tech question

Have a fuel injected courier 4x4 that is running like a pig. As soon as I put any load on it, push on throttle, it misses really badly and sometimes idles very rough, even struggles to maintain speed. There are however, times when it seems to run fine. I suspect dirty injectors and have put through an injector cleaner but didn't do anything. Can anyone tell me how to check whether it's the injectors or something electrical.

try unplugging each injector one at a time to see which is or isnt running right, just like when checking spark plug leads,if injector is working the revs should change, if it isnt working should stay the same...

May be fuel pump dieing or air filter blocked or most likely fuel filter.

Dirty injectors don't usually run good then bad intermittently, they just get worse and worse until you get them cleaned.

When they're that bad, injector cleaner won't do much you have to get them professionally cleaned.

Check what Matt says above, also check ignition leads and coils.

These engine have a habit of leaking through the insulation on the spark plug connector, often very hard to see but a hair line crack in th einsulator and the spark will jump out to rather than across the gap.A new set of leads & plugs usually fixes this,in extreme cases the coil is also required.

if the injectors are getting gunked up some cylinders will run lean and in turn u should hear detonation.

It was what killed poor cylinder number 2 on my ol' toyota. main bearing completely gone, piston broke in 2. Although it did pull great redline 1 point turns the night before :P

no engine warning lights popping up? efi is VERY sensative to afm or map sensor mis-readings. Cars can idle with them disconnected, but when put under any load thye don't like it at all. and afm's can get sticky...

Air filter and fuel filter new as I always service a car when I first get it but can't remember changing plugs or leads.
Thanks guys will check these things and get back to you if needed.
BTW oxygen sensor is probably original and done over 270,000kms.

All good guys. Thanks for the advice. Turns out it was really bad plugs, I forgot that I couldn't find the plugs and lead and needed to get new ones. Just didn't get to it.

At 270 000 km that oxy sensor is probably toast. I would replace it regardless.

Isn't it strange how we always go for the hard stuff and miss the basics.
