Registering 68 Beetle with 2180cc engine
Hi,
I am new to the site and to the VW world. I am looking into buying my first Beetle.
I am currently looking into a 68 that has been stored for the last 6 or so years after a major overhaul. The motor was a new Type one case that was
machined to be a 2180cc.
My query is in regard to to getting a blue slip for this in NSW.
I did some research on the RTA site and they say any increase of more than 15% capacity on an engine needs an engineers report, and this is obviously
more than 15%. So, I rang the RTA today and was basically told that the answer was technically yes, but if from the outside it looks like a standard
Type 1 engine, who would know.
I then contacted the seller and asked him about it. He responded that the vehicle was registered when he put the new motor in. At the time of
fitting and stamping the police, although he advised them of the capacity, put it down as 1600cc.
So, if I was to purchase the bug, what do I do in terms of blue slip? Am I likely to run into difficulties and need to involve engineers? If it was
still registered it would be fine, but the registration has lapse.
Anyway, any advice, help or opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

well you have 2 choices. the first is to say nothing and then possibly run the risk if you have an accident and the insurance company digs around they
may wipe their hands of you.
the other is to actually get the engineers and register it as a 2.1L. its not hard to get one, you just need to find the right one who knows a bit
about vws.
the only other thing to consider is has the gearbox and brakes been upgraded to meet the power of the engine.

Thanks barls.
I had definitely considered the insurance issue and that is something that concerns me. I had not thought about brakes and gearbox that much
though.
As for an engineer. At this point O do not even know if there is one in my town that I could deal with, so that could make things more complex.
I am starting to think that for my first bug I should go for something more standard.
Cheers..

where abouts are you? we might have a member close by that can point you in the direction of a decent engineer.
as for the upgrades, why not ask the owner. hopefully he has done everything not just one of them.
i run a 2L motor on a stock gearbox and its survived for a fair while but it all depends on how its driven.

As long as the engine number matches the paperwork I'd let sleeping dogs lie.
As Barls said it's the correct thing to do but I doubt many insurance assessors are going to go to the trouble of having the heads pulled and measure
the bore just to get out of paying a claim.
I bet you 90% of the bored out VWs still say 1584cc on the rego papers.
Mine always did even when it had a 1300, 1835 and 1776.

Thanks guy,
though I am starting to think the price is not right and much haggling would be required anyway. As it stands, as well as the motor issue and needing
a blue slip, it also needs an electrical check over, new tyres all round if not new wheels and tyres, and some other maintenance too. It is been
shelved for about 6 years.
So, for now I am going to look at 71 super closer to home. Unlike the unregistered one, this is standard on the inside, but outwardly.....ugly? lol
It has a Body Kit - F&R Spoilers, Skirts, Rear Apron, and is an interesting Orange, but I have ideas of how I would make it even more unusual or
ugly.

It is possible that in many ways the first is better in the long run, but I am leaning towards easier at the start at the moment.
Though, it is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. One is much more classic looking and the other custom. If I get a classic looking one I will
keep it that way. if I get a custom one I might go about customising it furthers.
But what is the trick with attaching pics, or can we not attach and only link? I made sure they are well below 1mb like the FAQ says, but it tells me
they are too big. Is there a dimension restriction too?

the size restriction is 100kb so you need to ether reduce them in size or as paul has suggested open a photo bucket account.

In that case, they get uploaded to my website.
The 68 with the 2180cc;
The 71 that is a little unusual;

I much prefer the 68 having said that first thing I would do is lower the front with some drop spindles, guess i am biased because the 68 is almost
identical to my 69
Just sent you a PM

I am sure most will probably say that the 68 is the go, but they are asking more for it than I like, and I am not keen on the whole having to fix up
quite a few things before registering.
Also, I actually travelled all the way to Sydney last weekend to check a few (not these) out and they had serious rust or mechanical issues. So I am
not in a hurry to travel 4 hours each way to look at the white one yet either. The 71 is an hour away so I am looking at it this weekend.

Hi
The orange one is not a Super bug, its a 1500 or 1300. Go the white one.
