eg33 legal in bus

Hi Guys looking at the new regulations, is it legal to put a eg33 6cyl into a bus or caravell? Seen it done online, but they are i think in UK or USA. I am not sure of the weight of either for calculation purposes. Not looking to hot rod it, just better easy power without the turbo.

second, what is the australian designation for the boxy body that replaced the bay window. is it a T3 or caravelle or vanagon or transporter or something else. i am having trouble finding them listed online for sale, either they are rare or i am using wrong names.

Then they need a inspection for vicroads rego, is the any difficulty in insurance?

Thanks.

Mark. Living overseas, returning home shortly.

Yes this is quite a legal conversion as it is within the power to weight ratio of a Kombi , but i would still check with your engineer that he is happy to sign off on it before starting.
Sorry should have stated that mine is the Orange/ White Baja Bay from Qld with an EG33 conversion as done by myself when i stil owned CVD here in Brisbane .
The bigest drama you will have is that the throttle bodies either need to have a set of runners made to relocate them as they stick up into the fuel tank at the rear of the engine bay or you relocate the fuel tank like mine to inside the bus with a new firewall (big job but well wiorth it in my case being able to carry 100lts for long offroad trips .
As for go . hell it's one hell of a ride with a genuine 200rwhp and you really wouldn't want to mate it to anything less than a 091 2lt transaxle / gearbox .
For any more info , feel free to ring me

Thanks Andrew. i will call when i get a bit closer to home. i was thinking of getting the subi box reversed by subaru gears as it already fits. then just have to figure out the gearchange mechanism.

The proper designation for this model is the T3 Transporter or Caravelle. It is commonly referred to as a T25 in the UK, and was sold as the Vanagon in the US.
The best ones to do a conversion on are the wasserboxers made from 84+ as they already have a radiator setup.

Gearchange mechanism for the subie box into T3 is easy. Use a type 1 shift rod which has a ball on the front end where the gearstick goes on. This makes everything shift perfectly and as it should Plus.... its cheap.

Mark,

Do you already have the T3 or will you be chasing one. I have a T3 Dualcab with a 3.3lt Subi quad cam, fuel injected on LPG gas. It is an Auto and goes like a cut cat.

I don't have one as i am still living overseas for another couple of months. i am looking online for something for when i get home. possible syncro but they are megabucks, or a van for work travel, not a full camper tough. I have had two bays, and 79 and an 82. loved them, but i found the camper a bit much for ordinary day use. something like a microbus with folding bed and poptop. but have to look at bottom of price list to get a fixer upper that i can convert, but not a basket case. i don't have the skill needed for that. I will be living in Victoria. down near Geelong.

look for a watercooled t3 with engine problems (buggered heads are common), they cost too much to fix so should sell cheap...
