You can get around not having an aligning tool Ned but I won't guarantee it with a VW.
I've done it a half dozen times or so with MG's. You need a rod-metal is best but a wood dowel rod can be used. It HAS to be a good fit in
the flywheel bush- that is vital. With the rod in the flywheel bush , put the clutch friction plate over it & mark where the splines start &
finish on the rod. Use soft masking tape around the rod to build up the diameter until the clutch friction plate is a firm fit. Then add a bit more
tape & push the plate on again & repeat afew times. You are aiming at making splines on the wad of tape.
On MG's the splines are pretty coarse cf the fine VW ones so in theory the latter SHOULD be easier & more accurate.
You should be able to confirm visually that the friction plate is nice & central when the pressure plate is bolted back on.
If you have a digital camera why not photograph the old plate in position b4 you take it out? Then you can confirm it later.
I've never tried it because I seem to have had an old input shaft forever!
