Beetle Body Identification

Just wondering if any of you knowledgeable vw fans out there can help identify the year that My baja was born?
It doesn't sit on the original pan that was replaced a couple of years ago by the previous owner
It was supposed to be a 63 model the Body does not have it's tag on the front.
One clue I do have is that it has the "vintage" screw in style seat belt mounts, also it has no lower B pillar belt mounts. I also bought another shagged but complienced Baja just for the pan and the QLD transport paper work this one is early 60's but has welded backing plate type belt mounts
I was told that for a short time in the late 50's or early 60's there was a transition from lap sash to straight sash belt beore they went to lap/sash combo
Is this correct?

Well
the 64 beetles did have the plastic screws in all the seat belt threads...
My book says these seatbelt mounts were added in 1962 VW year model...

I really cannot remember whether they had screws for the belts up on the pillars..
I don't think think they did....?????
I'm not sure when lap belts were about and when they changed to lap sash belts..
I now My 1968 modes had the lap sash belts fitted...

LEE

PS:
its very difficult to work out the year model from a body... rear of speedo date has when speedo was made...
and wheels have date on them.... once the mud guards have been taken off it even makes it harder.... LEE

There wasn't a great deal of changes bodywise between 60 and 67 so it can be tricky to date one that hasnt got original parts.

Like Lee said it was early 62 the seatbelt mounting points became standard front and back, the front sash part mount was very low, level with the bottom of the glass and the rear was just behind the side windows.
Also this was about the same time the spring loaded front hood started.
Before that they had a scissor type strut on the left side you had to release to put the hood down.
These cars are easy to pick cos the hood usually has cracks in the middle were servo attendants putting fuel in try and shut the hood without releasing it.

Round top seats started in 65 but they may not be original if its had a pan swap.

Also it may have been around 63 the front foot heater outlets had the slide covers fitted to shut them off.

If it still has original paint inside when 1300 engines started in 66 the "use genuine VW parts blah blah blah" sticker which was on the fanshroud got moved to the inside of the glovebox lid

Now I remember Joel, the white plastic screw near the side window etc...

its a shame VW in their wisdom didn't print / stamp the year on each car or the date
behind the dash etc...

It would have been so easy to stamp a build date on the ID tag with early cars, dunno why they didn't do it they dated so much other pointless stuff

I've found the dates stamped on silly stuff with mine like the heaterboxes, back of the dash (Lbug), door arm rests, alternator, indicator switch, etc
Even the brake drums which came off my first bug had the date cast on the inside.

Hi

I think the bonnet pull moved from left to the right hand side in 62 or 63.

It may not be accurate but there should be a dot etched into the windscreen on the round writing. Say if the dot were over the 3rd letter it would be a 63.

Also look to see if it had provision for a choke cable and bogged over semaphore holes.

H:crazy:hanks for the advise guys,
there is a dot over the first letter of the round etched writing (over the A in the word Armourfloat)
The B pillar belt mounts are very low below the front bottom corner of the rear window
I cannot see any evidence of a bonnet pull cable at all or a choke cable (it's been a baja since 1983 apparently
definitely has the spring loaded bonnet hinges
There is a number on the rear of the speedo 56a other than that it's a longer VW part no. and the only numbers any where
between 50 and 80 is 57
It's funny how the other body I have has std modern type factory welde belt mounts which I would have thought would
be newer than screw in mounts, however it also has what I would assume to be semaphore holes in the top of the B pillars
that are open on the inside and plugged with "factory looking" plastic bungs on the outside
again thanks for the advice it's much appreciated

If its a big window semaphore car have a look at the back of the dash inside the boot.

To the left of the speedo where the fuel gauge goes a semaphore car has 2 round holes one above the other.

The later non semaphore cars (after mid 60) have a single hole which is sqaure to suit the new fuel gauges that started in 61 for deluxes.

Dot over the A on armourfloat is an indication of 61 but it may not be the original glass, do they all have that?

Also belt mounts sound right for a mid 62 onwards model.

These cars have ended up such bitsas after 50 odd years,

Hi
any chance of a photo of the plastic bungs ?
and the numbers 56a 57 etc are electrical connection numbers...
the date is usually stamped into the metal of the speedo like
5/67 or 2.68

I don't think I've ever found any year stamps on My beetle Joel.. but have read where people have found them...

with all those inspectors on the production line...
at least one could have had a stamp with the year on it...
I suppose they thought having the chassis number would make it easy to find out when it was made... lol
