Alloy Case?

Am starting to plan and research for my engine build. Just looking into cases at the moment.

I can buy a new Mag block from CB Perfromance for $689.95

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=184

Or I could pay a little more and buy an alloy case for $749.95.
Plus pickup etc..

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1230

Can anyone give me a good reason not to spend the $60 more and buy the alloy case? I'm looking to build a very reliable 1641. I want to to last a million miles more than anything else. I figure the alloy case would be the better bet?

The aluminium case will be already machined for 94's so 1915 will have to do:smilegrin:
The freight will be substatially more with the aluminium case as it's close to twice the weight of the mag case. If your happy to stay 1641 I'd stay with the light mag case, 1915 wtf, go alu for the longevety, but they take alot more work during the build.

edit: only CB or Scat for the alu case

The first one at the top of the parts list says standard bore.

What is the extra work required during the buildup?

mmm well there you go.
Extra work, sounds like bugger all, but the short answer is making everything fit properly, both inside and out.

Can you PM me the long answer? Or would it be easier if I gave you a call tomorrow afternoon?

Call would be better if you want, but basically all the tinware needs shortening in some way where it fits near to the case, inside amounts to deburring, sanding/shaping, polishing bores for things like dissy drive, oil pressure relief plugs and the like. Often need modifing/matching oil holes to feed the bearings and where the oil galleries match or don't match the oil pump, even fitting the German oil pickup on the last I did needed the gallery plugs drilled to get it fitted leak free. Buy just one special drill and tap and you can blow over a hundred bucks easy. These all take many hours to detail where a mag case will be finished much better. But in favour of the ally case, so far they have had better lifter=bore clearance than recent mag builds. Cheers

Watch the freight from CB Perf, they can be fairly pricey....

Ok I see. I don't mind spending the time to get everything sorted before putting it together.
I just figure that if I'm going to buy a new case anyway why not spend a little bit extra and get a far better case (in the long run)

Just checked out what they have.

I'd probably be better off getting this one

Instead of this one

The first one for a smaller engine, but I'd still tick a few boxes of extras...as in, Full flow, center shuffle pins (hey one day the engine could get upgraded), machine for sand seal, I'd even recommend drilling all galleries or do it yourself to clean inside properly.
The second case is for when you get that big stroker crank :tu::tu:
And x2 for Vee Dub Parts Unlimited
