Chassis Number

Hey guys,

So I have finally bought my first type 1 beetle but I am struggling to confirm what year model it is! I was reading a book that said the first 3 digits represent the type then body shape then year so I cross referenced my number with what was in the book and the numbers didn't match.

Mine starts with 196 (1= type 1 / 9=??? / 6=66 model I think) can anyone confirm if this is right?

[size=4]HI

You have a 1966 beetle the NINE means it was made in Australia... at Clayton Victoria by Volkswagen Australasia

this number is unique to Aussie made beetles...

behind the spare wheel there should be a BALM or Berger paints sticker and an identification plate ...

cheers

Lee

I don't have any picks just yet, it is missing a few bits (i.e. carby) so I pulled it out on the weekend. The thought was just to rebuild it to stock so I can get the car registered and drivable then start the rebuild and buy a 1600 dual port to work a little.

Maybe I am better to look for a second hand running engine (1500) just to through in it for now and get it registered?

Yes
the 1500 H0 engines are very good...

many are already 1600 nowadays...

measure the throat of the inlet manifold...

30-32-34mm that will tell us something...

cheers

LEE

My 1500 H0 engine is now a 1600 engine....

Hey. Instead of making a new thread for basically the same question. Hoping I could get some help to try and work out the month and year my beetle was made if that's possible? From what I can find it seems that it would be a 1967 made in December 1966.

Here's the vin: 197417845

Matt
