Beetle Dress Rims


Just got my Rims back from paint today, had tyres fitted and put stainless steel dress rims on that i bought from CVD

How are these supposed to fit ? Ive put them on, but they seem pretty loose, and i fear that they might fling off when I go to drive with them. Am I supposed to bend the tabs out a little more or something ? Where the rim ends and touches the tyre, i thought the dress ring would sit flush against the rim, but is raised leaving a gap all round.

Also, is it true that I have to drive new tyres in for 1000kms before i can put my flappers on ?

Yawn...
to answer your question try expanding the clips on the rings to make it tighter
the reason people advise you to run your tyres 1000ks before fitting flappers is to help eliminate staining from the fresh butyl rubber in the tyre as it will stain! the best way i found to eliminate the staining is to smear a very thin layer of clear silicone on the back of the flap/ whitewall (and let it cure of course) this will seal the flap and help reduce some of the staining I will still stain but it will last longer

back in the 60s the dress rings were held on by the hubcaps...
nice tight fit...
I saw a new boxed set of those recently somewhere for $475

the new ones.... are maybe made for mexican or brasillan hubcaps or wheel which aren't identical in sizes to German ones... a few millimeters smaller or larger???

I have a nice new Hubcap but it won't go onto My German wheel...
I ended up denting it trying to put it on.. so it wasn't German quality... lol and have heard stories about the Brasilan hubcaps etc...

I haven't heard of the 1000klms rule for whitewalls ???

Im talking about this type of setup, i dont understand how you can have them held in by the hubcap
(Not my car, same rims tho)

right you have a newer vw mine is a 60s
You can buy those sort of dress rings at autobarn and places like that , I think 1990 Ford falcon Utes and panel van have them to . Like I said they sit better on a wider rim because the clips have a bigger surface/ dish to clip onto. some beetle stock rims have a different off set up to 1CM,
Bigger dish on the out side of the stock vw rim
What sort are yours???.

Lee , see in the pics of the front tyres how flapper don't sit right on the tyre and get a black colour after time . so That's why I guess you have to glue them on .

never had a problem with my flappers or dress rings, the dress rings seem loose but i have never lost one

I lost one of the Autobarn ones, found it again around the corner from my house and bent the tabs a little on all of them. They stayed on fine until some moron stole all four of them. :grind:
