Do I take a punt on the transmission ?

Hi guys, I have pulled the transmission out that came with my kg which has been sitting around for a long tiime. From what I can tell it's a 60 something long axle. I have drained what was left of the oil (not much), cleaned it up and changed to short axles.....Then I stopped to think.
Should I run with it or bite the bullet, exchange it or have it rebuilt or is ther something else I can do.
Any tips would be appreciated I don't want to spend the money unecessarily but wouldn't like to have to pull it out again when the car is complete

[size=4]Hi
seeing it had little oil in it was good...
as the hypoid oil eats into the copper/brass bushes...

that is a hard question to answer...

its easy for Us to say get it overhauled [expensive] or to say fill it with oil and a tube of nulon or MOLYBOND... in it...

I would go with the latter.. [cheaper]

You will know fairly fast how good the gearbox is...

Jumping out of gear.... not good..

whinning... depends how bad the bearing?? is..

if its not bad... the MOLYBOND should help..

My semi auto gearbox is basically a manual box with the 3 top gears [ 1st not needed] and when I restored My car [with it full of new hypoid oil forabout 5 years] [YIKES]
it made an aweful noise...
couldn't listen to the radio or CD etc.. too noisy..
after about 100kms or so [wild guess] the noise reduced until it was normal... a bit at a time...

I had used PRO-MAR Moly additive ...

I have since replaced the gearbox... lol anyway..

cheers

best of luck

LEE

Sorry Ash

I don't know where in the Hunter Valley to get a reco gearbox

and I don't think I can remember seeing them advertised anywhere..

it maybe.. get Your own gearbox repaired and pay what it costs to fix..
as the costs can be great...

Rumours only Lee, theres no proof of metals breaking down under exposure to gl-4 or 5 gear oils

With the money you save in not rebuilding, its worth the risk in trying and seeing if its ok.
If not then its nothing a weekend can't replace :)
