steering box worn out?

I have replaced everything in the front end of my 62 bug as it was worn out the only thing left thats not new is the steering box and the torsion bars, Anyways when driving I hit bumps and sometimes I hear thud noises it has to be the steering box I have adjusted it up and filled it with grease and it has a bit of play but basically can anyone else advise me if they have ever had nosies from a worn steering box or could it be a broken bar?

Thanks

shock absorber rubbers are the usual thing that wear out and go bang... they may look OK..

never ever heard of a steering box making a noise...??

don't know if a broken leaf will make a noise??

steering boxes usually just about forever...
they always have play in them...

they can be adjusted from the top and bottom...
both with the steering wheel pointing straight ahead..
never adjust with the steering wheel at full lock,,....lol

Thanks for your replys I have already replaced shocks all new steering tie rods and tie rod bars literally theres nothing left but the box and the bars that is not new when i had it all apart i was able to sort of produce the noise by pushing the pitman arm up and down but still i am keen to know if anyone has seen this or heard it before.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again

well
when the steering box is worn...
there is movement on the up and down part...

and there is an adjustment at the top..
a screw and nut...
loosen the nut and tighten the screw slightly
tighten up the nut...

there is also a large nut on the bottom which You can undo and tighten the large hex plug...

You are better off with a good used box rather buy a new one..
unless its a German one....
