Gearbox oil amount

Hi,

I pulled the axle boots of my gearbox the other day to find the left side was holding about 300mls of oil in it and the right one just had a little in the bottom. should there be any in there? Perhaps I am using to much gearbox oil how much do you guys use?

any help would be much appreciated.

[size=4]Hi

about 3 litres of 90 HYPOID gearbox oil
or 75/80 or 75/90 HYPOID oil

You fill it thru the side filler hole...
pour it in slowly as if it is poured in too fast it will overflow and You will think its full..

the oil will flow out to the axles and outer bearings..

its a tricky job pouring the oil in thru the filler hole... lol

best to drain the oil thru the bottom drain hole so You will have ALL new oil...

cheers

LEE

They take 2.5L but it's hard with swing axles as some flows down the axle tubes to the wheel bearings so the actual amount is usually abit more.
But all you do is fill it till its up to the bottom of the filler plug if the car is reasonably level.

If you're gonna drain it though make sure the filler plug on the side unscrews first.
Lots of people have got caught out draining their oil then finding out the filler plug is seized up or rounded out.

You're pretty right with an F-Vee but in a car it makes life so much easier to just get a little hand pump to fill them rather than trying to pour into a sideways funnel.

As Joel says.

Not sure what the go is these days, but I used ATF in my Vee trans., with a dash of Moly for the crown wheel & pinion.

300ml seems a lot for a boot to hold.......maybe you should find a circuit with more left-hand corners.

I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Thanks guys, I will fill it to the bottom of the plug, seal up the boot with some gasket cement and see how she goes!

the boots are joined at about 45 degrees or more
but NOT at the top as there is too much flex at the top..
