Bretts 2442 Engine build


Thought I'd post a few pic's of a very nice engine build that we have underway. We were getting close to having this package ready for Dyno Mania but Brett suffered an accedent the week prior, so it stopped progressing and attention was focused elsewhere. Fortunately he is now home from hospital and on the road to recovery. Hopefully sharing some details will help others with thier projects, and I'd be happy to share info if people have anything they want to know with a build like this.

Preparation is the key.

EVERY part gets inspected and improved, nothing is left as is without being sure every thing will go together correctly on final assembly, especially with some components available these days.

Brett wants torque and longevety so the package evolved to the combo here.

2442 88 x 94, CB LosPanchito heads, CB Quicktune EFI with ITB.

A Scat pro comp ultra light crankshaft with Chev rod and type 4 main journals was chosen due to superior quality and strength. Rods are 4340 Moly H beams. Chinese yes, but reworked to correct dimensions by Crankshaft Engineering and new ARP 2000 bolts fitted. Unfortunately these rods proved to be irregular in length and straightness so the little end pin bushes got replaced to rectify as needed, Craigs work was definately necessary here and elsewhere.

The case is cleaned, modified and deburred. Things like oil gallery plugs drilled out and tapped for threaded bungs. A time consuming job, but worth it, I usually find bits of swarf in at least one gallery just waiting to dislodge and end up en a bearing. Machining edges get smoothed and areas are modified for improved oiling.

Heads are another important area of rework.
A multi angle valve job is important for any engine to make the most of available power. Even heads sold with a 3 angle valve job are only just that, this gets reworked as with the combustion chambers and ports.

What a pity to have to 'hide' all that work and those beaut bits, when you put it all together! Still, the sounds and performance will make up for it.:yes:



I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

It's a two edge sword, the ally plugs can leak and even come out, in a type 4 block this is relatively common, and in the new aluminium cases I often find metal shavings from the plugs installation behind them. Also it provides access for proper cleaning with a brush, all the way through the oil gallery.

The pic above is blocking the oil gallery that the oil pump used std, but with full flow, it's best to be blocked to reduce chance of oil pressure loss, the pump also has a bung as often the pump body is slightly small in the case so blocking the case and the pump, there is no chance of oil pressure loss.

Here the case and bearing oil holes are misaligned and so modified with a die grinder.

Some things are just plain necessary, like the next pic, without clearancing the camshaft, an 88mm throw just doesn't fit :lol:

Here is a reworked AA Chinlee forged racing piston....yeah whatever, the std AA's are in the round filing cabnet. We have put a 500G finish hone to the cylinders, coated the exterior with black ceramic heat dispersant, and the pistons have been machined for a tight deck, but relieved at the chamber to give us a CR that we wanted, then ceramic coated tops and dry film lubricant the skirts all by Competition Coatings.

Here's the lower tinware we make, it shields the exhaust heat from the pushrod tubes but still allows plenty of air flow

Again scary as B4 made the same ally plates to separate the exhaust from the pushrod tubes on all the engines he builds?

Mmmm... difficult question to answer, as most of these projects develop to become the best I can provide for a given time frame and budget. Most clients change thier ideas as the engine develops. Even this engine had changes that definately were'nt expected but need to be rectified as the components show thier true coloursb, so they tend to be quite organic until the final package is sorted. Also installation and primary run-in are an important part to be considered. Carbs or efi makes a huge difference to installation costs as well. It's a quality verses price ratio that is up to the owner, but in the engine photographed here, there is over $3000 in labour + parts.

Yes mate, definately just a cruiser, with lots of torque and smooth fat power curve. Max rpm will be governed by the auto trans and we expect shift to be no higher than 5500rpm.

Tiny cam and Los Panchitos heads, but they will have a high port velocity to work with the low duration cam that is needed for a clean manifold vacuum signal for the full type 3 auto.

excellent thread and very informative this week here in aussieveedubbers must be engine week :)

Mat $3000 for labour + parts seems very reasonable so im assuming parts around $6K
