Torsion leaves work the same way as torsion bars, which work in a simailr way to coil springs. Think of a torsion bar/leaf as a coil spring
straightened out. Now put a pair of vice grips on each end and try and turn them in different directions..... you get the print affect. Due to the
nature of a coil, as you press one end, it twists the steel in the spring in the same manner.
Just be verycareful as stiffer isn't always better. and beetles having no weight in the front, means that something soft (comapred to a front engined
car) will still be stiff for a beetle. There are tricks that can be done with adjusters, sway cars and shocks to get a car to handle well.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Sorry to disagree with you Bix, but as a person who has run the swayaway front leaves for three years on a daily driver all i can say is that there
was a major increase in road holding with no reduction in the ride comfort of my car, if you want a rough ride all you do is narrow the beam 2" and
that will increase the spring rate far more that the increase of 10% that the swayaway leaves give you, as you can see in a previous post by Steve
Carter has been around these cars for years but did not know that these heaver torsion leaves existed hence most people do not know they exist
either, the torsion leaves were made softer in the ball joint front end the satisfy the American market and can be increased by the 10 % without a
problem and should be used with suitable shocks and a good quality sway bar and the front end set up correctly, if your tyre's are rubbing you need
to look at that problem before anything else, if you want to learn about the VW suspension and how to modify it there is a good book that covers all
the mods and explains in detail how it all works," How to modify volkswagen beetle suspension,brakes & chassis for high performance" IBN number

More than happy to be proven wrong. I suppose the point I was trying to make is, allot of people in australia have developed good handling cars
without the need to import or buy new leaves.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Good point from all ..... But I understand that there is no weight in the front and they need softer suspension in the front. In my opinion a 4 inch
drop under normal braking is to soft . I have gone the cheap option at the moment and bought some coil over shockers to see if there in any
improvement . I will let you guys know how it went. I also understand that the torsion bars / leafs work in a twisting motion. The shorter the bar the
stiffer as you mentioned. One thing that I didn't know was that the shockers work In a reverse fashion . Where they compress easyer than normal
shockers and return heavier to stop the torion bar/ leafs from bouncing down the road. If you understand what I'm trying to say . In affect the the
torsion bar dose all the work in the up motion and the shocker dose allmtbe workmin the down motion to slow or stop the torion bar from bouncing

You still have not address the problem of your tyres rubbing on the guards, as i said in a previous post i run larger rims and tyres and they do not
rub with the same set up that you have.

Ok guys just thought that I would up date you. I got some coil over shocks from classic vee-dub and they worked a treat. Very happy at the price and
very happy on the way they have changed the feel of the car. The tyer hits the gaurd whey now and then but that is under braking and a very sharp bump
turning the corner stuff . All I think I need know to fix that is ti get lower profile tyers. That cam wait till these tyers wear out. My next
problem is to fix the drum brakes. The master cylinder shat its self fixed that now the wheel cylinders didn't like the higher pressure so need to
fit new ones. Got them all I have to do is find the time to fit them
