Old farts! Retire!

This is only a suggestion, but if you are a long term member of the executive committee of any of the VW Clubs and you are also an old fart, I strongly suggest that you retire and hand over control of the club to the younger members.

That is exactly what has happened in the WA VW Club.

The older members who have been running the club for years and who have been doing a very good job of it, became tired of it all. Our esteemed president/editor/treasurer, literally burned out after the organisation of the WA Bug In.

To put it mildly, we needed a break.

At the last AGM we handed over control of the club committee to some of the younger members, by getting ourselves voted off the executive, but remaining on the committee..

We then showed them how to organise the Day of the Volkswagen and stepped back on the day and left them to it.

They ran the DoVW like a well oiled Swiss watch.

We can now confidently hand over the whole of the running of the club to them, in the knowledge thet they will do a good job of it.

In the immediate future the cheque signing change over will be finished and it will then be their show.

I say it again. If you have been running your club for years and you are an old fart, get out of the way, hand the club over to the younger people.

If in your club there is a group of younger members who are clever, intelligent and talented, they will have new ideas, new enthusiasm and new attitudes.

The club can only benefit from that.

Don't argue!! Just DO IT!!

well said Richard (shailuhud), not elequently, but to the point.
As the new VP, its a daunting task taking over something which is a corner stone of the local VW community, the last thing we want to do is screw it up, but on the other hand we do want to bring in new ideas, a fresh approach, and more open minds. As part of the new crew its an interesting challenge and hopefully we'll get "most" of it right, for the stuff we get wrong, we'll get it right next time!
I'd like to think that in the last couple of months we are doing it right, the last committee did a stearling job, organising events, runs and quizes, if we (the new crew) can achieve a similar level of professionalism and bring something new to the party then we will have done ourselves and the club proud!

if anyone would like any help or advice who is thinking of taking on such a role i'd be happy to have a chat! (vwdcq people?)
cheers jon

So... you're callin me an old fart now Davo ?!?!?!

:grind:

I've definitely retired tho... lookin forward to spending the time on my Ghia instead, and of course trying to drive the wheels off Jezebel on as many Sunday's as possible.

;)

Agree it's important to have the occasional "changing of the guard" in those that run any club, and there'll always be the "old farts" around to help if needed. I guess biggest thing is that it ain't rocket science... really just a case of being prepared to jump in and give it a go !!!

Over the past 50 or so years I've been involved in many car clubs, including committee positions. Age is not as relevant as the ability to jump in and do what needs to be done..........sometimes while others stand by giving advice, or just watching.

New, fresh ideas are important, and if anyone is getting 'stale', or 'inefficient', they should 'move aside, regardless of age.

Merry Christmas.

I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

i think the point was more that the people that have been doing the same thing for ages are getting tired of newbies coming along & not doing anything beneficial to the greater good, sides can relate/back me up im sure :)

new blood to the clubs is great, provided they stick with it & ignore personal agenda, cant forget where the club came from while pushing it to bigger better things to appeal to more people in the constantly changing vw world, look around at how many watercooler fans are around, they are vws too, encourage them to help, listen to new ideas, share old ones, its all about compromise right?
