Steering Coupler Question


I am in the process of re-building the steering on my 76 Beetle and all the documentation I can find and the parts found on various supplier sites indicate the steering coupler can be disassembled so the rubber ring can be replaced, with a part like this:

However, looking at my 76 coupler, it doesn't look like it can be taken apart (see pic below) and as you can see the rubber has seen better days.

Do I need to grind off the head of the pins and replace with nuts and bolts, or should I source a coupling from another bug?

Yes, Yours is not able to be unassembled..

all the earlier ones were bolted together..

and the rubber piece can be replaced..

I've never seen one like Yours..

I'd get an older replacement and renew the rubber piece..

I'd grind out the rivets and put in M8 bolts and locking nuts and a new German rubber coupling.

thanks for the tip mat. Grinder and some gentle persuasion and I just need a new rubber bit and some nuts and bolts and I know it will definitely fit my steering box.

Hi

Make sure the bolts are high tensile and pay attention to the wiring connector orientation otherwise your horn wont work.

Thanks for the tip Steve. I was actually thinking about this problem, but more from the perspective of needing to grind some POR15 off the beam I recently prep'ed.
