34 pict carb and 009 dizzy
Was looking Carbies in general on CIP1's site when I saw a 34 PICT description saying not recommended to run these with a 009 type distributor,
something about the advance curve is too slow which will create a flat spot on initial acceleration. Has anyone run this combo and had dramas? I have
just ordered a new 009style distributor and cant afford new carbs just yet

Thanks Matt, looks like I might be having to upgrade me carburation sooner rather than later. When is too early to ask for an early christmas

Do I need to buy an indexed crank pulley or are there marks on the original pulley? I think I have found aTDC mark but not owning a digital timing
light that I can advance, or a protractor could make it difficult to set it at 30deg total

The following is courtesy of vw-resource.com
More info here:http://www.vw-resource.com/tune-up.html
The arc distances that follow are based on a pulley diameter of 175mm, thus a radius of 87.5mm. Be sure to measure the diameter of your pulley and use
the radius of your pulley in the following calculations.
009 and SVDA distributors: Measure on the rim of the crankcase pulley 11.5 mm to the right of the TDC notch. This is 7.5o BTDC; mark this point with
white paint. This is the point at which the centrifugal advance (009) and single-vacuum dual-advance (SVDA) distributors are preliminarily timed (the
maximum advance at 3500 rpm will be the final timing point for these distributors).
Maximum advance: From the TDC mark, measure on the rim of the crankcase pulley 46 mm (for a 175 mm diameter pulley) to the right of the TDC notch.
This is 30o BTDC; mark this point also with white paint. This is the maximum advance point at 3500 rpm, the timing point for 009 and SVDA
distributors.
Regards,
Matt.

I can confirm that the 009 doesn't work with the 34pict carb. Flat spots like a bas786rd.
30/31pict is good with 009-good response and great to drive but lacks top end power.
34 pict works okay with SVDA distributor.

i gave up with the 34 pict. My old stromberg is as happy as larry with the 009. My mate is currently going through the familiar hesitation issues.
Regardless of the maxxed out setting on the accelerator pump and it squirting right, and regardless of the pop rivet in the butterfly, the issue still
exists.
SVDA made a world of a difference with the 34 pict though, can't beat what the factory intended.

This isnt sounding too good, Ive already ordered the distributor with electronic module. So, seeing as I am intending to build a new motor in the
(hopefully near) future, what would be a good carb setup to look for on ebay, to A: remove any flatspot/hesitation issue, B: maybe give it a little
more oomph and C: not cost too much because they will probably be redundant when the new engine is fitted.
Thanks for all your comments guys, I got it going again with a condenser from a 68 Dodge truck (the closest I could find at our only garage!!!)and set
the timing after marking the pulley as per Matts post. Running even sweeter now so If hesitation becomes a bad issue can go back to std, nice to
improve on things though

| that worked a treat Matt , checked the timing with the original dizzy after marking it out and what a difference. Smoother

I had a pict 34 o'hauled by peter richards at sourh west rocks many years back
he did some mods to it so I could run a 009 successfully on my 1600 without flatspotting
I have used it on both sp and dp 1600 with 009 dizzy and works a treat
it is currently on my beach buggy working fine
so it is doable but obviously not a common combo
