hi hoping some one could tell me what these no,s on the chassis mean ? ie build date ect. 1280828 thank you

NB that late 50's Beetles built late in the year were the next years 'year model', so yours is a 57 year model despite being built in 56.

you could be right as i think the no on the back of the speedo has a 57 on it, thats the way i used to work out the year on kombi,s how can you tell if the guards are correct , as this one has later tail lights and indicaters on the front guards. the semaphores are not hooked up

Rear guards should have imprints between the mounting bolt holes.
I'm not real good with oval front guards, I just check the shape of the headlight bucket and the metal conduit connected to the headlight bucket.
Post some pikkies and someone might be able to tell.

Built in 1956, its a 1956 car.
The car birthdate concept didnt come out until the 60's or 70's. You cant or shouldnt apply that concept retrospectively.
