NSW Hillclimb Champs Round 3-4 Bathurst. , now engine diagnosis.

The weekend of the 5th and 6th will see Glen and myself racing at the very special place we call Bathurst.
Saturday the 5th will be the 3rd round being the Esses and Sunday the 6th will be the 4th round Mountain Straight.
After a good check over and clean all appeared well after Cooperabung Hillclimb, i changed the engine oil and checked tappet clearances.
After Larry kindly highlighted my poor execution of sticker application i couldn,t sleep until i replaced the crooked sticker.:lol::lol:

Spoke to the boys tonight. Colin managed to win the class, some 1.5 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Ironically 2nd was the same Dato which beat Col at Kempsey. The temp was -3 this morning and the track was freeeeeeezzzzzin cold all day and little slippy they tell me. Glen was 4th in class and gettin use to some more HP under the hood. Tommorrow sees them head over to the other side of the Mt and do Mt Straight. Australia's fastest hillclimb. Good luck boys.

After a very very cold night camping on the Mountain the sun shined brightly on saturday for Round 3 of the NSW Hillclimb Championship held on the Esses track.
The cold overnight temps and cool but fine day meant the track was at best warm.
Improved Production 1601-2000cc class was again a hard fought class with 2 datto,s and Glen and myself racing hard all day.
My car felt sluggish and off the pace all day and i drove the wheels of it to post a time .3 seconds slower than last year. Fortunately it was good enough for a class win, allthough i knew something was not right with the motor.
Glen relished the extra hp in his rebuilt Stan pobjoy rocket and improved all day to post a pb time, good one mate.

Final times were,

1st in class Col 30.39
2nd Adrian 31.34
3rd Aaron 31.48
4th Glen 33.01

Sunday saw us move to the daunting Mountain Straight track for round 4.
This is a very fast track and again my little black beetle was feeling sick, i tried real hard to keep up with the Datto boys but by now i reckon the cam was a broom stick.

Final times were,

Aaron 1st in class 54.24
Adrian 2nd 56.18
Col 3rd 57.12
Glen 4th 58.67 another pb.

I now will do a check of my valve lift this weekend but i,m 99% sure my new cam is flat. If this is correct i will pull the engine over the next couple of months and Larry and i will talk about next years plans for it.
It will be hard not competing for the rest of the year but thats racing.
I will post up pics and vids soon.

Cheers Col

Thanks for the very generous offer Rudi but i must decline.
I would never forgive myself if i hurt your motor. Checked easy things the other night like full throttle and dizzy being loose but unfortunatly all is good.
I,d love to just throw another cam in but Larry and i talked and we decided to use the extra time to shout the motor some new pistons and barrels.
If the championship was on the line i,d carry the thing up a hill on my back, but it,s not.
Hopefully i can gather up enough cash to get the parts so i can run an event or two later in the year, family and mortgage payments take priority over toys.
Glen has kindly offered to double enter with me in his car for the Tamworth round on the 8th of July. I,ll probably take up his offer but i must remember it would be rude to go faster than him.:lol::lol:

Have you run that combination at Bathurst before ?

It sounds good in the vids, so its hard to believe the cam is going flat.

It,s a new cam for this year, Bathurst was only the second event with it. If it,s not the cam then something else is not right, and if the cam is good then it,s coming out and the old faithfull will see another hillclimb or two.

Popped the rocker covers off and dropped the oil this arvo and guess what?
Grey sludge on the sump plate, bummer.
Will pull the engine out tomorrow and the plan is to come down in 2 weeks to drop engine to Larry and then go to Goulburn and watch some VW hooning.
Looks like the old faithfull cam will go back in with some new pistons and barrels:cool:
