Engine main seal?

Hi All
Just pulled the motor out to do some mods and found little strips of red seal material in bellhousing with a small amount of oil. Before the motor was put back in the main seal was replaced and a new cromo flywheel fitted. Any hints at what could cause this?
Also end play set at 0.003"
BTW Elring seal used

Hi
I have read in manuals where the seal is pushed in flush BUT
I have a copy of the special tool to knock the seal in and it is stepped...
so the seal should be knocked in further..

Maybe the flywheel was up against it??

Also, those red seals are pretty crap and I dunno anyone in Oz who stock VW Germany seals as the VW Brasil ones are of pretty poor quality.

The 'genuine' VW German seals are available at a cost but will give troublefree motoring. Go to VW Heritage in the UK for cheapest shipping price :)

Cheaper than a genuine VW Germany seal at $30. Only time would tell which is better ;)

Mat Berry stocks the ELRING seals so does Vintage Vee Dub and anyone who knows what a good main seal is..

Not worth the trouble to fit anything else...

Never heard of the Elrings before so went with what I know and trust. Quality of the genuine VW German seal is very good tho ;)

That would be certain, mind you, they are probably from the same factory.

Do you mean the Elring and VW seal are probably from the same factory?

I'm sure the likes of Matt Berry would not risk a hard-earned reputation by using inferior parts.

Elring and victor reinz are great quality seals. But i would choose elring first.

This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Ta Greg.

I have seen Victor Reinz go way downhill in recent years. Thier early Porshe seals leave a bit to be desired.

Matt's a dying breed then mate. I've seen so many companies worldwide just sit on their laurels and sell off their reputation as quality goes downhill yet prices go up :(

Also, interesting that if the VW and Elring are made by the same company that the Elring is way cheaper than the VW part. Least I know for next time where to get one from :)
