popping out of gear
Hi guys, ive got a 61 baja beetle, 1600tp. its only done a few thousand miles since i had the engine out and renewed all the mounsts.
ive noticed it recently has been popping out of 2nd and 4th on cruise, i can lightly hold the shifter in position and it doesnt happen. but i can feel
alot of movement on it.
Im wondering if those cheap trans mounts dont stand up to off roading or if my gearbox is stuffed.
Maybe some additional bracing or mounts would help?

have you tryed moving the steel retainer under the gear shifter ( just 1mm at times "could" fix this) if you have had the gearbox out and renewed
the linkage.
If it is just shorter or at a slightly different pitch will changer the geomery of the shift and may only just be allowing it to go into 3rd or 4th
gear.
( ive only ever had this problem with one gear not two on the right. mabey try moving the plate left 1-2mm???)

Hey man.
It's a indication that the gearbox is on the way out.
The first swinger box that I had in my Baja would pop out of 4th gear while cruising down the highway once in a blue moon. Then it slowly got more and
more frequent until it wouldn't stay in there at all by itself. I ended up having an occy strap hooked under the edge of the rail that holds the
front of the backseat up, then hooked it around the top of the gearstick to hold it into gear.
One other thing to check before this though is whether you gearstick is adjusted properly in the tunnel. Because you said it was 2nd and 4th and they
are both on one side of the gearstick. Perhaps the gearstick is slightly too far forward in the car so you're not getting quite enough throw to put
it properly into those 2 gears.

2nd and 4th says to me shifter base needs to go fwd slightly as the shift rod may not have enuf travel to get the box fully into those gears.

+1 I had my 1st vw do this once in 1st gear, then it got more frequent till the point I had no 1st gear. got a 2nd hand box, then took the old one
out and did a swap. while the old crappy one was out I dissembled it and found total destruction of the pinion bearing which destroyed 1st gear in the
process. there was teeth and bits of roller bearing everywhere and all the gears and bearings were damaged from the metal pieces floating around.
the strange part there was no noise from the box when this happen.
A rule of thumb I have noticed, a lot of transmissions fail 3 times as bad as the sound they make.
Last week I saw my boss's son's astra transaxle with only 70k on the whole car, was starting to make a moaning sound, just a light moan. We went to
pick the car up and the head gearbox mechanic showed us the inside. completely f**ked, all the gears had teeth missing, bearings all damaged. all from
one spider gear breaking a tooth off from front end hop in the wet.
you can try adjusting the shifter mechanism but thats what I was hoping would fix mine but deep down I knew it was toast. one tip! always expect the
worst

The way I solved it? once the gearstick was in 4th, I'd hold it there using my leg  
I ended up scrapping the car not long after due to a lot of rust....

Jumping out of gear is an internal gearbox problem IF the shifter is properly adjusted. And two gears, those being 2nd and 4th says to me that a
shifter adjustment could very likely fix the problem. And definately move the shifter base fwd slightly, not rearwards.

maybe you should of had some more fun with it before you scraped it.

As Matt said. If either the 2 pushing forward gears (1 & 3) or pulling back gears (2& 4) are jumping out then normally means the shifter needs
moving forward to give a little more throw for those 2 gears.
If it was a single gear playing up then more likely to be a worn synchromesh but in your case sounds like the shifter needs adjusting.
Being offroad you should have urethane mounts front and back to keep the box in place better. If that don't work then maybe go solid mount.

synchro's don't hold the gears in place (or stop them jumping out) they only slow the gear to the shaft speed to allow engagement of the gear.
Try adjusting the shift plate at the gearstick
