Cranky starter kits


Righteo....

So i have a cranky kit for an 1800 box but now want to run it on a 2L. It doesnt throw out far enough to reach the ring gear in the 2L from what we can tell.

Does anyone know or have pictures of the differences between the two? Just not sure of how the pinion is set up differently.

.....who actually makes them now? Tried off the cranky kit website but can't get an email that works from there

The beetle/002 kits use the "#13" subaru starter (Automatic) and I think the 091 kits use the "#12" subaru starter(manual). The pinions on the manual subaru starter stick out further than the auto subaru starters. But Paul would be your best source for info.

paul what is the starter needed for a oo3
auto with a ej22 details of starter required and contact details of where abouts to source one.Anyone have a estimate of how much for the starter to suit auto with ej22. thanks

If your on the Gold Coast why not go and see John Sherman as he stocks the C.A.E starters. 003 autos take the same starters as a beetle.

I can say that the Crankykit starter is 100% better than any other option. The Auto Subi version cranks my 11:1 3 litre type 4 engine with ease. No VW starter or Hi torque come close.

Give Paul a call or have a look at http://crankykits.com.au/ 

The auto starter is the most hp, so I used it with the manual gears that I required for the 091 (2 litre type 2) bell housing as I have a 228mm clutch, but for yours I believe the auto subi and the crankykit is all you need. I got the lot from Paul for around $400

cranky kits were designed for and use a "genuine" nippon denso starter, the quailty of the internals ie motor windings and brushgear etc are far superior to anything else available (which because of the economy are all made in china to a price)...they look the same but are only copies ....id prefer to rely on the quality of the japanese....
(and i only use second hand nippon denso starters which in my experiences are still far superior to any new shiny chinese copy :lol: ) i think that says a lot!

if you are on the raggedy edge of performance like matty berry your pushing these little guys to their extremes...which will soon find any short comings in their manufacture....

John - unfortunately there is no cranky kit offered for an auto 003 auto box....there are clearance issues with the adaptor plate and require hours of machining more parts and time. I have done them in the past but they arent a viable option to manufacture as in the 5 or more years i have been doing cranky kits i have only been asked the question about 3 or 4 times.... (and i have done my arse on each of these :crazy:)

If there are a few more guys out there in the same boat with auto boxes and require more crank let me know as doing a small production run wont hurt as much as one offs

Well i have seen the results on Matt Berry's 3 litre type 4. The difference is night and day. The VW 091 starter just didn't crank fast enough. The cranky kit makes the engine spin so much faster. I say two thumbs up for the cranky kit. Big statement confirmed.

I believe the factory VW Auto starter to be the next best anyway. The biggest down side is they are huge and heavy, but more powerful than a Chinese Hi-torque. Go for one out of a camper or even T3 van for least wear.

Hoping Paul or Matt or someone who knows their starters may see this.
We are gonna have a go at fitting my Semi-auto bug starter to Johns Kombi.
As above its EJ22 powered with a 003 Auto.

I bought a new German Semi-Auto bug starter a few years ago when i put the EJ22 in the bug and always assumed it was an SR17X which should fit Johns Kombi but I've just pulled it out and its an SR18X but what the difference is I don't think its much??

I'm pretty sure it will work fine but just want to be sure.

I'm with you, normally SR17X. Looks similar, and the T3 Auto is interchangeable with Type 1 and 2 auto starters so should fit. What does google say about 18X

Google just says its for the 80-89 Auto Vanagons, the only visual difference I can see that I had forgotten about is all the SR18X images I find have a really long B+ stud on the solenoid.

Mine had that when I got it, had to cut it short as it touched the Kafer bar

Maybe T25s need the longer stud for some reason, all the SR17X have a nice short one.
Nothing else seems overly different, housing is cosmetically.
