I've got a vintage 60s Beetle and have been interested in replacing the drum brakes for awhile. But I'm living in Melbourne - does anyone know of a reliable mechanic who can do this conversion properly?

Hi blue65

I use in the northern burbs of Thomastown Volkscourt telephone 9465 3357. Wolfgang is happy to work with supplied parts and will provide great service/ price. I am looking to do the same conversion on my beetle.

Anyone have suggestions where the cheapest supplier of the master cylinder is?

Some truth in that but in reality the disc caliper sits the pads far closer to the disc than wheel cyl does the shoes and the stroke of the MC can easily handle both setups. Main thing is the single holds residual pressure for the drums but this will keep small pressure in a disc setup and cause the disc to overheat from constant pad contact.

just rememberd that bob mowbray makes a 5 on 205 hub that looks the goods. all alloy with bolt on disc. have a look for hunter rivmaster.

Some front disc set ups require a 2LB residual valve to hold the pads closer to the disc, i am in the process of fitting them to mine as the seals have not let go of the piston and pull the pads back, resalting in a soft pedal, that why they are available from wilwood and other after market manufacturer's, 2LB for disc's and 10LB for drums.

Aye, not bad. Just had a look. Will have to ask him for a few dimension to see if a vented disc can be mounted to them. All ali one piece should keep the engineer happy :)
