Throttle binding ever so slightly
Hi all,
MY throttle is binding just a tiny bit, but enough to make the revs go down only slowly when driving it around town. Not drastic, just annoying more
than anything.
Works fine when I get into it and stab on and off WOT.
Checked all the linkages (CB cross bar on dual EFI throttle bodies) and everything is clean and free and synchronised so I figured it must be some
rubbing/binding in the throttle cable/tube.
Any ideas on the best way to clean it out? Happy to put a new cable in if this one is frayed or similar, but not quite sure how to clean out the tube
if there's gunk and sand in there!
Any help appreciated,

Had a similar problem, and found it was the left side arm on the cross bar just touching the fan housing. The old 'cordless hammer' fixed the
problem.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

If you want to clean the throttle tube in the tunnel, take the cable out and pull a draw wire though and put a piece of rag on the end that will fit
through the tube, soak it in kero and pull it through a few times, do you have the outer cable that runs from the tunnel tube over the gear box to the
engine, a lot of people leave them out, if you cannot find the issue, you might need to fit a light return spring to each throttle body

Haha, thanks Greg. Checked for any fouling on tinware and housings but all is nice and clear.
Thanks vwo60, that's what I thought. Have to be a tiny piece of rag well attached so I don't drop if off in the tube = worse trouble!
Yes I have the outer that goes over the gearbox. The throttle bodies have their own springs which should be heaps to return to the stops. I'd also
started looking for a secondary spring to go to the centre arm (where the cable hooks in) but figured I'd do the cleaning thing first as I don't
want to just put on a spring to mask a problem if there's one there!
I'll break out the rag and kero.

can you simulate the problem with the cable disconnected??
Sure it is not wear in the ball joints??
You running steel or aluminium hex bar??
I had a similar problem with a CB set up where occasionally one carb would not return quite to the stop and you would come to idle at lights and the
revs would be up
A stab or 2 on the throttle fixed things
Fixed it with a CSP set up

Thanks bizarre. Yes I was able to simulate with cable disconnected (logic told me to try this AFTER I'd done the cable pull out and clean! D'oh!
Went to Bunnings and bought a few different springs to act as an accessory spring. Found one and hooked it up to the lever that is in the centre of
the bar and has the cable hooked to it. It hasn't really changed the feel of the throttle (still fairly light which I like) but I know that
everything is returning to the stops as it should now.
It would seem that I either have an air leak in the vacuum lines (I have lots of vac hoses running MAP sensor, fuel pressure regulator, waste gate,
BOV and boost gauge) but damned if I can find it, or there is an issue with the set-up of my AE in the ECU for the injection.I'm going to go back to
square one with the AE set-up and try to make it work right.
If anyone's got experience with setting up AE with a Megasquirt and Tuner Studio, I'd appreciate any comments!!
