Subaru weight vs VW
I realise this has been somewhat covered before but I'm trying to get an accurate number for the weight of a conversion for a drag car, no definate
plans yet, just brainstorming.
Basically how much heavier is an NA subaru engine and 5 speed than a typical worked VW setup, IDA's etc etc type 1 box.
The kicker is I wouldn't run a cooling system, so don't need the weight of radiators etc. Would most likely still run an alternator but nothing
else.
Probably end up sticking with VW but I thought the idea is worth considering at least for a low cost reliable bracket car. I'll contact subarugears
for gearbox suggestions.

If your intrested in a serious na Subaru motor my mate did a 2.5
Methanol/enderlee injected speedway motor,made 330hp fwhp.He's also doing a 3.9 H6 for a friend,the H6 is only 20mm longer than an ej and not much
heavier I would defiantly compare a H6 also

yeah a h6 crossed my mind just after I typed it. I know any subaru will be heavier than a simple type 1 mag case setup, but once you start talking
aluminium cases, or even a motor like a pauter how things compare. Just seems like a sensible solution for an economical race car.

Found this.... very tempting to start with a motor that makes 220hp NA to begin with.... this one makes 475hp apparently.

Todd, is it possible to setup hydraulic clutch for the suby box? I mean relatively easy. has any of your customers done it?

Pretty much all of my customers run the Subie hydraulic clutch, either type - the push clutch type or the turbo pull clutch type. Fit a Subie (or
generaic trailer) master cylinder, hydraulic line down the car, slave cylinder and done. Alternatively just keep the stock VW cable and use it with a
pull clutch gearbox. Works fine too but a bit heavier on the foot.
I believe the Kombi box is 49kg so the Subie 5 speed is 10kg heavier.

Thats good to know.
so what about the leverage point on the clutch pedal to ensure proper throw out distance?
Is there a standard spec for this if using the suby clutch MC ?
I so don't want to use the VW stock cable setup. Feels like my clutch tube in the tunnel has rust inside it at the pedal end, or the pedal is really
rusted?
Do you have any pic of the MC install? would love to see how it goes together.

Vlad it all works properly. Connect the cable up and go - don't overthink it, it's been done many many times.
For MC install there are pics on my site plus many many build threads of VW's with hydraulic MC fitted to the clutch pedal in various forums. The
Manx forum has some great examples.
