Burning Smell form headlight switch

Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone can help me out. I was driving my 66 beelte last night, and just out of curiosity I turned the dimmer on the headlight switch. Next thing I know there is a burning smell coming from the headlight switch, no smoke that I could see though.
Whn I got home the battery was so flat the car wouldnt even turn over. I have taken the switch out of the dash, which smells, but none of the wiring looks damaged at all.
So my question is; Has anyone had the same experience and will changing it out for a new switch most likely fix my problem?

Thanks for listening
