1500 single port with hand crank pawl - which vehicles used these?

I have come across a 1500 single port engine with a hand cranking pawl on the pulley.

Just wondered what would have used this sort of VW engine? It is a single port but I am not aware of bugs in that 1500 engine era having a crank handle or the ability to do so. Not really aware of any VWs that were hand cranked at all for that matter. Any ideas what it might have been fitted to or intended for? Or were these a retrofitted thing as an optional extra?

Split bus? Country buggy?

The engine was reco'd but never used in a vehicle and if it fits something "special" I'd like to know, rather than just offload it as a stock bug engine. It may be up for sale shortly.

Most of them are from ex army VW engine powered field generators, water pumps and air compressors.

I think Country Buggies had them...
and maybe VERY early beetles may have had them...?
but I have see boxes of them for sale at swap meets.. lol
and the army generator sets had them, as they had no generator or battery...

I thought country buggy.

I just bought a retired VW mechanic's entire stockpile of leftover stuff. NOS parts, genuine, used bits, engine, gearbox, tonnes of stuff including the 1500, at least that's what he is sure it was. Rebuilt but never fitted and he sold the CB last year. Plus he wanted all his other car stuff gone too so got early Austin, Morris Mini, BMC, Leyland, Ford, Holden and even Datsun stuff. And then he brings out all his manuals too for all the veedubs he has owned or had there. Awesome lot of stuff.

On the down side I can't fit the car in the garage, on the up side, stay tuned to the parts for sale section, its a treasure trove.

country buggy had the crank handle nut too, but they are 1300cc. They also had a 1200 as an option!

Country buggy will have an engine number starting with F125 and the oil pressure switch will be on the top of the crankcase not on the side. :tu:

Engine no starts with FN and ends with P but looks like a reco VW unit, it has the VW logo with arrows round the outside aka reused/recycled symbol, and the spot where the old number was gas been machined, like a new number has been issued. Interesting. Did they o this when replacing engines?
