Changing carbys


Hey guys.
Just wanted to ask some advice about changing carbys.
I've got a '62 bug running what I believe is a 1641cc motor (it may be higher, I don't know. It's never been pulled apart to be sure)
Anyway it has twin kadrons which I want to get rid of. Never been happy with them. Sick of them always going out of tune.
Want to go a single central mount carby.
I've got my hands on a new '44 IDA Webber, however the mechanic I might get to install it says I'm better off going original, with a '34pct vw carb.

Just want to get your thoughts???

Is anyone out there running a 1641cc with a 44??
If so how do you find it? It's a very strong little motor so i don't want to sacrifice power by going original.
I don't have much money to spent so dont want to waste money changing carbs, then having to change again.
I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.

Kadrons on that size motor generally run quite nice , but depends the condition of carbs .
When was the last time you pulled them apart to check throttle plates or gaskets might be time for a new linkage . Centre mount would be a backward step performance wise .

It won't be an IDA - it will be an IDF if its a 44
If its an IDA 48 I doubt you will get a manifold

Most people I know with single non progressive centre mounted carbs have never jetted them properly.

If you do go that way make sure you have manifold heat to give yourself half a chance of getting it to work

AH yeh thanks guys

yeh it is an IDF. I mis typed.
When i bought it three years ago, it was running twin del'orto 48's!! On a 1641cc. Rediculous!! The kadrons of course were better. But i've since realised there are bigger issues at steak here, there is fuel getting into the oil sump. not sure what's wrong here, The right side has always been a bit doggish, the overjetted dels f#

A single 44 presents a few different problems to duals, the smallest chocks are 28mm and would probably work on a 1641, there are quite a few articles on the net , http://www.aircooled.net/vw-carburetors-jetting-102/

Were the Kadrons new or secondhand when fitted? What ever carby you decide to run will need proper setting up depending on the engine capacity,
the camshaft and your compression ratio. Then it also matters what ignition/distributor you are using, and that is working correctly too.
Do you park your car on a slope? with the front of the car highest? Dave
