Will 76' bug steering column be interchangeable with 69' bug?

Good afternoon!

Would anyone know if a 76' model bug steering column be interchangable with a 69' 1500 series bug?

I understand they have same chassis and dash, however different steering wheels and indicator stalks. I wish to use the original indicator stalk, and steering wheel, but just swap the internal collapsible steering shaft.

I suspect the one i have is a bit dodgey at the clamp where it sleeves onto the metal coupler (at the rubber steering coupler). despite the tightness of the bolt/nut, theres probably +/- 20 deg movement if you hook it hard enough to rotate left/right (hence I know its not steering box slop, and visually i have witnessed it rotating about previously).

I suspect the 215's have given it a hard time.

thanks,
Chris.

It will but keeping your stock indicator switch is going to make it very messy and lots of work.

the 76 shaft has different steering wheel splines so your existing steering wheel wont fit, you would have to run a 74-76 steering wheel.

Ive done the same thing, fitted a 74 steering column which is the same as a 76 to my 70 bug which would be the same as your 69.

I used the 74 wiper stalk and wiper motor to keep it simple.

The 69 switch housing with no wiper stalk is not going to fit the 76 steering column and the 76 wiper stalk will not control the your 69 wiper motor unless you are happy to live without self parking function.

All in all it would be a lot easier to get another 1500 column or find a 71 which doesnt have the wiper stalk, I think I may actually have one but will need to check.

I like the wiper control on the column so have done it to a few cars. Yes mods are required, but you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Don't ask for details, it was toolong ago, but the first time I did it I was a mere 20 year old..... :)
