74 Superbug with electrical riddle
Help needed.
I pulled the engine out months ago and finally got it back in.
The problem I have is I can't remember where the 5 wires go on the coil.
There are 3 in a harness from the left side of the engine bay, 1 from the distributor
and a single wire with an inline fuse from the right side of the engine bay.
Obviously one of the wires from the left side which has power supply goes to positive
side of the coil. Just unsure about the others.
Please help as I need it back on the road.

So you've got your Alternator already plugged in?
The black wire from the right with the inline fuse is the reverse lights, that connects to the coil positive.
The coil positve is the thicker black one come from the loom on the left and the green with red stripe is the oil light wire.
Being a 74 there is going to be a few computer diagnosis system wires,
there will be a grey one which goes to the coil negative but it doesnt do anything so don't stress too much about it and a black one going to the
alternator B+.

Ok, I put reverse wire on pos,
power supply from left harness on pos
Wire from solenoid on carb on pos
Wire from dizzy on neg
Greyish bone wire with green bands on neg.
Got back fire only

reverse wire on pos = black
power supply from left harness on pos = black

That all sounds correct to me
Check firing order (plug leads) and timing
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.
Sometimes Volkswagen dealers sell spare parts. Amazing isn't it!

Did you do anything to the engine while it was out?
backfiring and popping when cranking is always like Phil said firing order wrong or timing is out.

Rebuild on engine. Replaced pistons, rings and barrels.
Replaced rotor button, dizzy cap and all gaskets/seals.
Coil had begun to leak oil from a rub mark on the back so it
got replaced as well. Was given a diagram from a "good manual"
that gave me a location of plug wires on the dizzy so it should be right.
Never pulled dizzy so timing shouldn't have changed. But they can only go in
one way anyway is that correct? Then adjust timing from there.
This is the diagram. Is it correct?

There should be a small notch in the distributor body where the cap sits denoting #1.
I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

It depends a. which distributor you have and b. if the distrutor drive was aligned correctly.
If its still got the original twin port vac advance distributor the outside numbers are correct, if its got a 009 or single port distributor the
inside numbers are correct.
I did put a vid on youtube a few years ago showing how to find TDC and align the distributor, I just can't get the link while I'm on my phone.

Ok, plug leads were 1 position out in the cap. Did it as per that diagram but I watched one of those Bug Me videos am noticed a plug lead from the
left bank going across the cap to the right side of the dizzy. Moved them all round 1 hole each and it fired first turn of the key. I am happy as a
pig in shit
