Smashed my 1976 standard beetle chop top
New member here, first post
Last week a P plater coming in the opposite direction turned in front of me. Was going about 60 km/h and skidded about 1 metre before inpact. So much
for the daytime running lights. Luckily got out of it only with mild whiplash (symptoms take 3 days to show) See pics below

Yes the doors still open
Other party admitted fault now dealing with AAMI. Went to AAMI approved repairers, they took one look at it and began scratching their heads with a
bewildered look on their faces. Have not been to the assessor yet
I expect they will say it is a write off, if so what is the market value. My insurance with RACV has a value of $5000 and keep the wreck. I am not
intending to lodge a claim with them as the other driver admitted fault. I think I can argue it is worth more.
It has no rust and is restored eg new calipers/rotors, shockers, ball joints, CV joints, wheel bearings, exhaust, clutch, rubbers, tyres/wheels,
rusrproofed
Any ideas for how to argue/establish a pre crash a value
Also it is my understanding that a car older than 15 years does not go on the uneconomic write off register. Anyone had experience with this register
as I intend to repair the car (got bonnet and fenders in stock, anyone got a good front clip for sale). I am in Victoria

Chances are your PDS states agreed or market value, what ever is lower.
So... if you haven't nominated an agreed value in your insurance documentation, they'll jump on market value which will be a quoted figure from
redbook.com.au for the lowest applicable value of a 76' bug (typical bastards!)
To fight for a greatre market value, you have to look for sales of similar vintage / condition vw's to prove thats the going rate and produce a
report with those supporting sales. If you did already nominate an agreed value of $5000, and the market value is greater, well the insurance company
will contractually be able to go the 'lesser' of the two. IE: $5000. Mind you, because you are not at fault, then AAMI shouldn't have a worry as to
what bill is sent to the other insurer.
None the less, time for a baja !

I had a Vanagon written off a year ago and argued market value
Best advice is trawl car sales etc and get examples of (preferably) sold cares
As for the mech repairs you have listed, I believe that is maintenance a d would not count to the value of the car.
Futue te ipsum!!!

Had a friend do this with a motor bike years ago, thinking the crash was the best thing and he'd have an awesome new bike......insurance laughed at
the quote and gave him $1500 for his troubles.
always insure agreed value, and this issue won't exist. Are you concerned that the at fault party's insurance will only cover market? It will go on
your insurance, as all they will do is trade a bit of paperwork.

Update of insurance claim
Went to the assessor, they were scoping to see how I would respond to writing it off and giving me a market value.
Once I started describing the car and restoration they quickly realised I am a ballbreaker and offered to pay me directly the amount that one of the
repairers quoted to fix it.
The amount is $5855.30
"We will contact you in 3 to 5 days to work out a payment method"
I think this is a good outcome and will begin dismantling the car once I receive the cheque
Of interest is a car does not go on the repairable write off register if it is over 15 years old |
