My 71 Super beetle - Question on Pobjoy motor
Hi guys,
Got myself a 71 super bug in March this year and loving it.
Didn't know much about the models at the time but have learnt a hell of a lot since then. Now I know that it isn't as desirable as a 60's or a
50's bug but hell its my first bug and i love it.
I've never had so many conversations at the bowser with random strangers. Not to mention commodore drivers wanting to drag at the lights
Here are the specs:
1600 Stan Pobjoy built motor (2010)
Twin Kardrons
Lowered
Widened track
So much fun to drive and holds its own in traffic although I feel that it could give more with a good tune.
I took it to Indian automotive and they recommended a few things to replace, namely drive axle boots, engine mounts, NS struts, more engine
ventilation due to pressure in rocker compartment. I ll get them done in time.
The question i have is do guys think this was a Stan Pobjoy engine built in 2010, to me it looks like 1995. The phone number is a give away. Seller
said it was in 2010 with 9000 km when i bought it as it was just garaged. He didn't have the paper work.
I was asked by Indian of the size... all i know that it's a 1600 but they think it may even be a 1640 or a 1700.
A few months back I asked for some advise on engine tuning as vintage veedub and was told that the twin carbs are way too big for a 1600.
Looking forward to getting some tips and sharing experices with my fellow beetles.
Cheers,
Digs

Welcome to the world of Bugs (and Supers)
Nice bug!
If it is a Pobjoy there should be a number on it.
Give Stan a call and ask him what it is
He usually builds 1916's
I am surprised Vintage told you that dual Kads are too big.
I have run dual IDF's on a 1600 with great results
Money spent of handling makes a BIG improvement

Digs,
If it's a Stan Pobjoy 1600 built I wouldn't be changing it.
Stan will tell you himself what he thinks of 1916/2110 etc etc
1600 engine from him is one of the best engines ever built. I was chatting with him only last week. Give him a call. Loves a chat

You're bug is stunning! (50's - 60's bugs more desirable, that's an objective statement, your late bug is more safer, has reliability and better
handling!)
Ain't been there, ain't done that.......yet :P

I'm not a super kind of guy, but has to be said... your bug looks sweet !!!
The engine is much more likely to be a base 1916 or a 1640 imho, but yeah - Stan will know for sure.
Give him a call, tell him your engine number, and he'll tell you if he built it... when he built it... exactly what he built it as... what the
tappets should be set to etc... basically everything you could ever want to know about the engine, and probably then some !!!
Just make sure you have some time up your sleeve when you do call him, as yeah - Stan's pretty much always on for a chat.
