Intercooler advice.

Just wondering for those who have forced induction, what type of intercooler are people using, water to air or air to air. Am thinking water to air would be better for my 2.1 T3 kombi but just wanting to get other opinions and set ups as to where coolers are located?
TIA

Just due to the layout of any aircooled VW then a water cooled charge cooler is the more compact and efficient way to keep induction temps down.
