subaru ecu or aftermarket???
I am buying a Subaru Outback for an engine to put in Blaster,
I have now come across a problem, do I use the Subaru ECU or an after market one?

on it.

it reverses the throttle body so it doesnt smack into yr firewall, or you could just hack out your firewall and not bother with one...

Oh ok I don't think I will need one as the firewall in my car has already been moved forward from when it had an EA82 in it.

Ok so I have now come across another problem, would I still be able to keep the stock ecu if I was to run E85 fuel or not as where I live I can get it
from the pump and it is up to 45 cents cheaper at times compared to 91, 95 or 98 octane.

Leave the E85 to the cars that are designed for it from factory, it will end up costing you more than you can save at the bowser. You would need to
work on the fuel system as well as the ecu and that is if the engine can even take using E85. KISS principle.

I know that you can run the engine I bought on E85 but you needed to change fuel lines and put a flex fuel sensor on it but I don't know if I needed
to change the ecu or not.
If it helps I bought an EJ25 from a subaru outback.

just use the complete 25 that you bought , that way the ECU works with the engine and you won't have any dramas down the track, tip,...... unless you
have paperwork showing timing belt work done recently throw the sucker in. if not its wise to do it all while its on a work bench.... then you have
peace of mind

Back to ecus' in the interest of cheap I will use the stock one just to get him on the road and drive-able to work any kinks and what not but
eventually I will convert to an aftermarket ecu from haltech with flex fuel so I can run E85 as it is considerably cheaper and it burns cleaner in the
engine but you use more of it so what you save on buying it you lose in having to refuel more often.

Yeah head gaskets are an issue on the ej25 and do the timing belt or shit will get expensive pretty quick If it snaps.
I personally would stick to the standard ECU and save the money. As standard it should be plenty of power in a bug.
Is it the quad cam or a SOHC??
What gearbox are you using??

I have got the entire car booked in to get the engine looked at at the mechanics to change all the fluids do the timing etc. It is a DOHC motor the
same as a Forester but it isn't turbo-ed as I can't drive a turbo on my L's or P's. Haltech do have a map-able plug and play unit which uses the
standard wiring and it can run flex fuel so I may be doing that in the future. In regards to gearbox I am getting the standard one rebuilt at the
moment so it hasn't got 50 years of crud in it.

Anyone who says a EJ22 is just a boat anchor may not know as much as one thinks!
Use stock ECU. I cant fault a basic Ej22 in a Bug.
"Lesson of the day" do your research and TALK to the guys that have actually done it, not there mates mates father who done it 20 years ago!

Plus as you're on the Sunny Coast Sunspares in Yandina say to run non-turbos on 95 octane and not to go near the E pump.

BTW my sons baja has his radiator above the engine and so far hasn't experienced any downsides to it. He does have the cowl fitted but away from the
body so it sort of acts like a scoop around the aluminium radiator.

Well after a few weeks of debate I have decided it is in my best interests to go with an air-cooled motor, as it is what I know and what is easiest
for me to work on as I plan to service the car.
I will do a full write up on my reasons in another thread so it is better for future users to find and use.
