Beetle budget build (Hopefully)

I did it again. I bought this 64 and I'm hoping to complete it on somewhat of a budget.

It needs an engine, pans, lower bulk head, napoleon hat, and a whole lot of other things...

Body off, front beam removed and flipped to see the damage.

https://preview.ibb.co/jqTK3w/20171001_161900.jpg

Have the bulk head bottom and napoleon hat ready to be replaced.

https://preview.ibb.co/fWFcqb/20171001_161937.jpg

Reciprocating saws are great...

https://preview.ibb.co/mWGTwG/20171001_165602.jpg

Pans just resting in place, they are Brazilian and the body mounting holes line up ok. Only problem is some rippling but I can hammer it out

Finished up the bulk head and napoleon hat. The aftermarket repair panels really aren't the greatest quality but still work

Next to weld up the floors, just need to buy more mig gas

Supposed to be, and so far things aren't too bad. Roughly $2500 into it.
But! I did get scammed, I bought an engine for $350 that was supposedly recently rebuilt and put in storage. The seller was a real ass, as soon as I got it home it was obvious that the valve cover was just washed off to look new. The fan shroud had a large wasps nest and thing didn't look any better inside. I did get a spare distributor, fuel pump and generator out of it tho so there is that.

Finished up the floor pans today.

Now to work on re-sealing the transmission, rear brakes and then the front beam and brakes.

I need to find a complete pedal assembly, it was missing from the car.

Got onto doing the link pins and drop spindles

The original link pin bushings were worn to an oval shape and had actually cracked.

They pop out easy enough

I need to redo the link pin shims. I thought I could give it some negative camber up front from adjusting the shims but reading online it wont work.

Re-fit the gearbox. Did the rear brake lines, no real point in using a brake line bender. It's way simpler to just bend them by hand, you need to be a real gorilla to make them kink.
I couldn't fit the front lines, the drop spindle casting is interfering with the brake hose so some grinding is in order soon.

Refilled the gearbox and no leaks!

https://preview.ibb.co/iFmyDR/20171116_175757.jpg

Also changed the spring plate bushings and lowered one notch, pretty much the same setup as my other Beetle.

Front brakes done, also semi assembled the pedals. They were really rusty but with a vinegar bath and a flap disc they should be usable. Just need an accelerator pedal now.

I'm going to try and rebuild the engine I purchased. It was water damaged but I'm hoping the bottom end is fine so I'll gamble and do a top end.

I purchased one new (used) head and one of the existing ones cleaned up ok. The other water damaged head was also cracked.

They cleaned up ok with a soft brass wire wheel on a Dremel.

https://preview.ibb.co/cgVrSm/20171124_182110.jpg

I've got new pistons, cylinders, valves, seal kit and push rod tubes on order. Fingers crossed it will work.

Got some things done while I am still waiting on some valves to show up.

Sound deaden the pan and pan gasket

https://preview.ibb.co/enWe5G/20171129_202259.jpg

Cleaned up the engine

https://preview.ibb.co/k9cNsw/20171125_205746.jpg

New rear main

https://preview.ibb.co/cXNrKb/20171125_205438.jpg

Had a good flywheel and clutch laying around so installed them. The flywheel that came off this engine had teeth damaged. It also had an o-ring but this one did not. Form my research there are two types, I just used a paper gasket and some rtv. Hopefully it doesn't leak.

Front tin and pulley back on

https://preview.ibb.co/kvsK5G/20171201_180607.jpg

Modified the fan shroud

Pistons, J-tubes, pushrod tubes arrived and waiting

Only issue is a leaking valve cover so I'm happy.

I have a fair bit of body work to do on it so I'm just slowly building the motivation to start. Rust repair and paint are my least favorite things to do.

I'm planning to start from the rear and slowly work toward the front.

This is the colour scheme I want to go with. I will use red oxide for the body and flat black for the fenders. I'm still going for a rat look as well.

I did start with the rust repairs. I'm not being too fussy with this body, If I find a better one in the future I will swap it out.

I did purchase an expensive new mig welder setup recently but having to clean up the metal and use a lot of shielding gas got annoying quick. The old flux core doesn't care if there is rust or paint, just like a hot glue gun. But with metal.

Got the roof out of the way and primed, had some bare metal spots starting to rust so etch primed those spots and a coat of primer surfacer.
