Not vw really (subaru)
Does anyone know if you can reverse the inlet manifold on a ej20 turbo so the throttle body faces towards the rear. |

I Believe you can. Rigoli has done this on at least one of his wrx's that I've seen. The water manifold below the inlet manifold can also be
reversed (as in my bug so the water neck faces forward).

You can also spin it after it exits. The EJ20 I sold to Dan to put in his kombi came with a small manifold that bolted to the factory EJ and then the
throttle body bolted to it. This let the EJ go into the kombi without having to put the throttle body in the fuel tank.
Very simple design made from two 90 degree bends cut down.

I also spun the complete inlet manifold to put an EJ20 (NA) in my bus. Relocating the alternator was a bit of a challenge but I managed to make up a
bracket for it. I can probably find a pic if you haven't already solved your problem.

It'll be good to see all these jap motored buggies when they are finished. I'd love to see them come out on club runs.
So what are you guys doing for sumps with those things?

I was intending on showing the bus at the action day on the weekend, however on my tripback from down south last week i developed a nasty engine
noise. I made it home, but suspect it is a main. Only dissassembly and diagnosis will confirm. Bit of a bitch as I have only done under 4 k on the
engine.
The engine importers reckon it was the oil I used. The suby workshop manual says use 10/30 -which I did - but these guys use 20/50.
Not too sure, about that. Anyway I am after a good cheap low K NA EJ20 from around bris if anyone has one.
At the moment the sump is hangin low so she has the Bull kombi look about her -he he, but I have plans to make a custom shortened pan sump without
reducing capacity as the guys from Kennedy Engineering in The States sell to their customers. They claim a 6" reduction in clearance.
I will post some pics of the bus on the members cars site when I get some time.

The importers are on drugs if they think putting 10W-30 in an EJ20 wrecked it. I would fight them on that one. Even if it involved attempting to get a
letter from Subaru or a respectable Subaru workshop.
I run Castrol R synthetic 5W-30 in my V6, and that's what you should be putting in the Subaru too. I tried 20W50 in the V6 and it made the
lifters real noisy.
Glad you like the Baja. You should have found me and said hello. Anyone in a Manx Club shirt would've pointed you in the right direction. :thumb

the depth of the sump is an interesting point also as it is not much lower then the oil filter and the engine pipes so these have to be changed also.
i priced some extracters back as far as the turbo and they want 2500 for them in stainless. OUCH!! looks like the tig will be coming out to make my
own. Mine will be more of a road buggy so I am not to concerned about it. Have to see when I try some departure angles. |

I have an EJ20 N/A DOHC Japanese import which is mounted on a '68 Beetle chassis. The chassis is fitted with a Purvis Eureka body. Pics here http://groups.msn.com/PurvisEureka/jennysf4.msnw
As you can see I still have a long way to go before I can even hit the starter. I'm also in Brisbane & bought the car from a guy in Camden
NSW. The motor was already fitted with an adaptor to a beefed up L Bug box all from Indian Automotive. I am inteseted in any Brisbane contacts.
Also any info on the throttle mount adaptor or hints for swapping the manifold around (pictures too please!) would be greatly appreciated, as
otherwise we may have to modify the firewall .
P.S. the manifold switch around is a popular mod for fitting these engines in planes http://www.sdsefi.com/aircraft.html

Jenny should be a nice car when finished. Well I am probably going to attempt turning the manifold around on the weekend so i will be able to tell you
exactly how much of a pain it is. |

So those of you who are doing/have done this conversion, are you using a normally aspirated Jap import DOHC, or the local SOHC engine? The reason I
ask is because the DOHC also has a two stage inlet manifold. I can't seem to find any info on it other than the brief bit in this doc here http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/files/SAE_boxer.pdf

Yes jenny mine is the DOHC suby ej20, yes the manifold is reversible as I said above, you will however find mounting the alternator difficult.
I will try to get some pics up of my setup tonight or tomorrow.
The setup on Dans kombi that brad mentioned however is definately worth consideration as mounting the alternator will be easier.

Excellent! I have been looking on info on this subject for ages!!!!!
All of the wrx guys want to keep their air con, all of the RS liberty guys want to keep their air water intercoolers and nobody has any info on
reversing the manifold. Who would think I'd be looking at a VW forum for guidance.
I have ej20TT powered brumby and I'll be reversing the manifold on it next week. If anyone could send me any pictures, info or even let me
have a look at one (I'm in brisbane) Give me an email ej.cooper@student.qut.edu.au ASAP because I will have no wheels next monday.
Thanks in advance!!!
(ps, found you guys thanks to jenny there, thanks jenny!) |
