the longer I'm motoring the rougher the engine runs.

I recently tuned it, it doesn't seem to be overheating (dipstick not to hot to hold), runs okay in the morning on short trips - but driving it in the evening (air cooler @ night?) , specially on longer trips or a number of short ones it runs rougher the longer I go.
Starting to think it maybe a blocked heat riser, i can hold the air off side of the heat riser but the air on side is to hot to hold - is that a fair test to prove its blocked?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes stock 73
that sure sounds like the exhaust gases aren't going thru the heat riser pipes, but I have seen many Cars (even in VW shows) with the ends of the heat risers cut off as they were probably blocked up & didn't work....
that certainly is a strange one, unless You live in a cold climate... My Son has had a terrible time this winter (0 degrees overnight & mornings) with his dual throat Bug Spray carby icing up, as it doesn't have heat risers at all....
You can buy an electric heater wire that wraps around the base of the carby manifold... a Victorian company was selling them a few years ago, and it was advertised in an Australian VW Magazine..

Yeh, Aussie VW Performance Center still sell the manifold heater blankets I believe. I think they come in 6V and 12V and can easily disconnect int he summer time as they just feed the V off the coil. They are in the far-ish eastern suburbs in Melb... If you really want, I could find out how much they are and mail you out one...what goes around comes around.....:thumb

Suppose the first thing i should do is see if the heat riser is blocked, unblock it (if needed) and see how she runs after that(thanks for the offer oval TOFU).
Lee, its not particularly cold in the evenings when she plays up - say around 15 degrees?
Sounds like I had a similiar set up to your sons on my 74L (it was only 4 years old then), the car ran like a dog all year round.
The other thing i forgot to mention is the car has a backfire, which has gotten more frequent.

The other thing You should check is the tail pipes... they are not pushed in too far are they? restricting the exhaust gases..
Your Muffler could be blocked , and usually to have the engine backfire means a leak ?? in the exhaust system.
VW Engines like to have back
pressure in their exhaust muffler system...
sorry, i can't be more helpfull,
Lee
