MSD multi spark discharge - help
hi there
Im looking into the virtues (or not) of an MSD.
Car config now
71 S bug
1600 TP
GT 40 coil
single Webber 40dcnf
petronix ignition
009 distributor
can anyone give advice on price brand and model suited. and where I can get one

Depends on how much you want to spend dude really.
Iffen you are handy with a soldering iron then there is a very nifty ignition kit available which is a multiple spark CDI. I think Jaycar carry the
kit. By all accounts a very good design and should prove to be a far more robust design that the CDI's of old, even the later pulse shaped
CDI's
Sets a maximum number of sparks at around 3 or 4 or something like that (I cannot remember)something like that and can be triggered a variety of
methods such as optical, hall effect or magnetic proximity.
I would presume it could be triggered by points as well.
You are currently using a "Petronix" ignition yeah?.
I dont have any idea on that particular system as far as triggering is concerned but it will most probably be only of 3 types as above.
I seem to recall these kits being in the 140 buck range.
Otherwise, any reputable speed shop will help you with MSD genuine stuff but expect to unload a fair bit of freight for a decent aftermarket multi
spark ignition.

Abot right dude really. 
Unless the engines is a real special with zillions of reva, turbocharged or something like that I dont reckon there would be much benefit really.
Hes already got some kind of electronic ignition on it so the exercise may be just that yeah?!! :thumb

My mate runs this on his 1916 in Cali and swears by it.
I gather "one" of the big points is the "tuneability" of it. You can dial in your owns curve.
Now - do you want to spend $500 to a $1,000 for this??? (about $400 US)
Then again a new SVDA is $130 US
All depends what else you have to spend your money on? :jesus

I actually have one on my F-Vee!
A simple Mallory twin point dizzy with no vacuum advance. They are quite configurable as far as initial, rate of advance and amount of advance.
We (currently) must trigger the coil with points and distribute the spark mechanically ruling out electonic ignitions but the rules dont say how many
points can be used! 
I was not aware of the electronic dizzies tho.
Nice looking clobber but as you say the prices are very steep.
Definitely not worth it when it is a relatively easy exercise to recurve the stock ignition.
On my older cars I have run a simple Jaycar transistor assisted ignition module that are available for about 50 bucks for a kit.
They can be triggered in a variety of ways but I simply used old points to trigger them so I had a failsafe system in event of a module failure.
These systems are fantastic value in the low end scheme of things and result in good improvements all thru the range due to simple dwell extension and
fixed dwell time features.
To date I have never had a failure of these units and I have had one in my old turbo 1600 Capri for over 15 years with the same set of points!

I have seen many MSD brand models 6a 6t 6al etc available at varying prices
Do they just replace the coil
which model is the right one
what else is needed to fit them

The MSD 6a and 6al are basically the same except the 6al has plug in modules to set the rev limiter.These systems are a capacitor discharge ignition
but deliver multiple sparks below 3000rpm to give a more efficent burn.The 6a and 6al are switched from your existing distributor and then provide
primary switching to your coil at around 480 volts.....Good system.........not worth spending the moolah with your engine combo though.
