Not exactly what you are after but:
This swap has been done quite a few times in Nissan Pulsar ET's and the weight increase is negligable in the fairly lightweight N12 Pulsars.
However, bang for buck wise, the CA18DET is nowhere near the same league as the brutal and bulletproof SR20DET.
The 2 litre motor is only marginally bulkier and produces gobs more power and grunt in stock form than the CA18DET could ever think about.
The SR20DET uses an aluminium block as well contributing to a lightweight package.
Not to say there is anything wrong with the CA18DET, altho very sweet running, they are just not as well developed engine package as the SR20DET and
use an iron block contributing to weight.
When you add up and compare the variables such as cost, weight, power, availability of aftermarket bits and original parts, you cant go wrong with the
SR20.
Would make an awesome buggy package!
Have fun with it

Yes the SR20 is a good engine but i have 3 CA18's sitting on my shed floor doing nothing, and all have been freshly rebuilt.and i have access to 2
Exa's so wiring looms aren't a prob. i wouldn't consider putting a CA or a SR in but i have the CA's sitting there.

Ahhhhhahahaha thats different then!
M8, i would not even think twice about it then!
You got the gear altho, I doubt I would bother with the stock engine management.
Prices of aftermarket fool injeckshun pretty much preclude bothering with the expense of stock stuff unless you can get it for nothing.
I just bought an EMS T1 with looms, relays and tuning handpeice and the lates firmware update for my Pulsar ET for 600 bucks.
Stuff like MicrotechMT-8 and Wolf 3D are going for the same price S/H.
Price the goodies you need from a front cut and that pretty much covers it and often then some yeah?
The you can tune the thing to your hearts content whenever you like.
I gotta ask tho dude.... why 3 rebuilt CA18's on the floor??? LOL.
Can I have one??

The CA18DET is also a popular conversion for the N13 pulsar is it almost fits straight in.
I have a friend with a CA18DET in a AE82 sprinter (RWD), and it does the 1/4 in about 12 seconds, so the motor is quite a nice little unit. He had the
boost wound up, and it was very laggy. felt like nothing happened down low but when the boost hit it was gone.
My brothers SR20DET silvia is more torquey, I guess bigger capacity tends to do that.
Both of the motors aren't as smooth as say my V6, but they are still nice. You will probably have problems with length with the motors, as you
will with any inline 4 in a baja or buggy. The cage to hold them may look too long and ruin your departure angle. Could you measure the center of the
crank to the bottom of the sump depth, and also the bellhousing to the crank pulley length? Would be interested to compare to the V6, as it is about
as long as I would want to go.
Weight should be ok in a baja, but may be a bit much in a buggy.

Tassupervee, i can't help my self at the salvage auctions.
I also have friends in the EXA club. One who is a mechanic and likes to tinker and experiment with them.
Baja Wes, I'll get the measuring tape out as soon as i can find it.

I think covair motors and quite a few honda motors spun backwards. I am pretty sure all new honda motors spin the right way. When honda got a new
japanese president of the company he decided they were going to spin the normal way. I think most honda V6's spin the right way.

To be honest, i dont believe the physical size of the engine would be a consideration other than the depth of the sump. Thats a simple fix.
Its a four cylinder engine so lengthwise, yes it will be marginally longer than a dak dak but not significant in my view.
If you got really pedantic, it is nothing to rotate around the axle centrline and raise the rear of the engine to accomodate any added length and
lower the suspension for greater ground clearance but again I dont feel that is an issue at all.
I used to race in desert rallies (BP & Mallee) and many of the baja bugs and buggies back then (late 70's) were powered by P76 4 litre
V8's and they saw no reason to alter the engine alignment away from stock other than to add some stout bash bars along the bottom and around the
back of the engine.
That was often using stock sumps.

for a race car departure angle doesn't matter, for offroading it does. They are two completely different things.
An inline 4 will be a lot longer than a VW motor that is basically 2.5 cylinders long.
It will also be longer than my V6 I expect.
the race cars also tend to have lengthened ( 3" ) trailing arms which moves the rear wheels back.
