Turbochargers


Being a dim wit with cars can someone explain how these things work (Turbos) is it force feeding fuel back through or what. And what does air pressure (Psi) got to do with it? And what does it mean by high and low pressure turbos what does each achieve for increased engine power?

This is really simple, first as you know there is a positive air pressure around us of around 14psi. When an atamo engine is doing its bit, sucking as hard as the piston chamber allows it only has access to that amount of air pressure. When you turbo or supercharge for that matter you are using mechanical energy to stuff more air pressure than is available normally. As such the piston chamber is filled with more air, therefore if you add more fuel you gat more power. Also on a subjective note this is also why when you turbo an atamo engine and feed it 14psi (of extra air) you more or less double its power (I’m talking Jap cars here, I have no turbo vw experience). So there you have it, my poor attempt at explaining how a turbo works, it seems to hard just think of your engine as you breathing, now it does not matter how hard you inhale, you have a lung volume potential. Now to turbo charge yourself stick an air duster from your compressor in your mouth :) although strictly speaking the compressor should be powered by your ass LOL

Thanks 555bug, yeah my main point was to get to indentifying the differences between superchargers and turbochargers or they the same? Cos i trying to work out what piece of gear (Bosch VW) has been put on my brothers car (76 Golf GLS). I get a pic soon.

Superchargers are a compressor driven mechanically by the engine. Probably best known on top fuel dragsters.
That thing hanging off the top of the engine bith the bigass belt turning it.

Turbochargers are a compressor driven by expanding exhaust gas across a centrifugal turbine.

Both force feed the engines but do it in a different way.

Thanks Tassupervee. Now this is an interesting one, from your description i gather the unit in question is a supercharger since it is run from the pulley type system from the fanbelt of the stock engine. So what superchargers did Volkswagen (Bosch) make?

i'll bet your brother has a turbo diese :) they are kinda zippy but not quick. The only factory blown golf model was the G60 that used a funky supercharger that looks just like a turbo. These were fitted to golf GTI's and they were quick, there may have even been a 4*4 version but I'm not sure. Anyway I have never heard of a G60 in Aus as I guess they are pretty rare :( there are a few VR6 powered MK1 getting around though and they fly :)

the G60 golfs are 4WD, none came to australia cause unfortunately they are all left hand drive.
the supercharger vw used is referred to as a G-lader. i have seen one of these engines in australia. i think they were only fitted to the 8 valve engine and only mark 2 golfs.
if you want any more info on them just ask

Hi

The unit on your brothers Golf is most likely an air pump for the emission control, it pumped air into the combustion chamber to help make a cleaner burn, most have been chucked in the bin by now.

Yeah well it has some modification so I am told by what my brother related back to me what the mechanics had said to him, but my brother was unsure. It pulls pretty nicely after 3 grand has registered on the tacho. It is the stock 1.6L petrol, but it has an extra belt drive running (from the main fan belt) to what looks like a turbine. In Golfs the engine layout is east-west so there is plenty of space in em. I think i may have been wrong about it being VW, it might actually be an Audi part, but i did have Bosch on it.
