no. you are suppose to have bumpers. i have seen those little nudge brackets, that mount to the bumper mounts. but i think they are also illegal. and
yeah i think you have to protect every body from your extrator header and pipes also. thus needing to keep the rear bumper.

Oh, Well. Move to the West, then.
It's legal to have no bumpers on a Beetle here (I just worry about my rather expensive engine if I get rear-ended on a city visit...)

EVERYTHING IS ILLEGAL - & getting worse ??
If ALL the Beetles without bumpers are put off the road.... there will be a lot of VW owners walking... I know locally they don't seem to have
any problems being passed for registration each year.... and those chromed nudge bars can't be legal...
Virtually everything IS ILLEGAL... if You take Anything off Your Car, or in most cases ADD anything to Your Car...
I am told that its illegal in NSW to ADD a chromed exhaust tip to a standard exhaust... if it didn't come on the car originally.... Thats just
plain Stupid!!
In My Humble Opinion - that is....

The chrome tip on the exhaust thing!
Does that count if the vehicle was originally offered a chrome tip as an accessory?

The "nudge bars" are considered a dangerous projection - consider what they would do to a pedestrian if you hit one. I believe the reason
it is legal to run without bumpers is simply that they were not a requirement when it was made.

Find a real bumper on many a modern car...?
The RTA told and provided in writing for me why it is not essential to run the bumper bars when I had mine off for a while. Copper was not happy when
he saw the RTA fax which I kept in the car.
DUring that time I also didn't have a front plate. The RTA also faxed me info for that too. No original mounting point no need tomake one. The
original bumper (even tho removed - at the time) did not come with holes. Didn't need it.
I know lots of people that have gotten slips for both but a fax from the RTA with the details and requirements in the car at the time I was hassled
kept me clear.

talk about lucky.... Faxes from the RTA ????
You sure were lucky....
Probably the only one to receive faxes from the RTA.... and then keep them in the car....
I suppose when You think that modern cars don't have anything like bumpers protruding from them... and I can't answer about the optional
extras, although usually , if You had a small engine in Your car but a larger engine was an option, You CAN put that larger engine in Your car...
unless they have changed the laws..... which seems on the cards these days.....
Lee
Good One....
Have You noticed the current ALFA models,
there is no real place for a number plate..
and they spoil the front of the car....

I am not going to run bumpers on my bug, all VW places will tell you that you need them and will kindly offer you a set...
But in reality I have seen no rule that says you must have bumper bars.... |
