am I right? rear timware

another semi-idiotic question :)

danielles beetle has been missing the rear tinware from the motor, since we got it, so we picked up a reasonably good condition part from the wreckers.

but when we went to fit the tin to the motor, it was too narrow across the preheat pipe cutouts, well it was too narrow all up by an inch or so.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing the tin is from a 1300 or smaller engine, and it wont fit as we have a 1500 based engine?

does this sound right? the beetle we scavenged it off was an earlier model with the wide 5 drum brake front end, and we have the late 4 stud with front discs as per 1500 beetle :)

PS anyone interested in swapping a good 1200 tin for a decent 1500 item :)

I think you have the rear tin from a 40hp 1200 motor. The stroke on a 1200 is 64mm as where the 1500/1600 you have has a 69mm stroke which makes the motor slightly wider!

oops, the wrong user syndrome strikes again, Ryan posting here.

well, I had a marvel of an idea, and after running it past my brother, we both agree it may work.

six holes line up with bolts or threads in the other tin thats there, or the heads etc, and the only bit that doesnt line up is where the inlet preheat pipe cutouts are. since we dont have anything across the back at all, I am going to trim the cutouts so it fits.

I dont think it will completely seal, but its a very average looking bit we have (was in a burnt out beetle) and anything will be better than whats there :)
