Tallest Type1 Diff Ratio?

Guys
Whats the tallest ratio diff for a type 1 barrel box.
I have the usual 4.3 & 4.1 but I was wondering iffen there was anything taller.
Reason is I have some close ratio straight cut gears but the 4th gear is 1.2:1
This is a mighty short top gear.

I never ended up finding out 2G

I played around with the gear calculator and compared that R&P with std L-Bug gears -vs- 3.88 R&P / L-Bug box with 0.82 4th. The 4th gear
final drive was almost a perfect match with each other, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd would have all been taller. Great for a light car with torquey motor.

But the $$ scared me off! :cry

They are a single side cover box. Looking from the rear of the car the RHS diff side cover is cast integral with the tranny...

FWIW - 3.88 r and p and a std 1.26 3rd gets you 100mph with 205/70 s at 7000 rpm ---- or there abouts

Hi

An L bug is a 73 - 75 bug with curved front screen, also called a 1303. The last bugs made in aus in 1976 also used a 3.88, you can easily see if the
box has 1 side palte from under the car.

3.88 ratio gear boxes have weaker gears, maybe stick with a 4.1 and play with gear ratios.

just a thought.

Just had another thought tho, aren't the IRS diffs non transferable to S/A?
If so, get onto someone in the UK and ask for them to get hold of a "GT" beetle diff. These were UK only cars, they were swingaxle, had the 3.88
diff, but the diff was a limited slip item.

Hmm all interesting food for thought.

Im using the stock 1st & 2nd gears but using straight cut close ratio third and fourth in a T1 swingaxle arse end.

The engine is a turbocharged but otherwise stock 1600 TP. Only a light blowjob. Ill keep it at 8 Lb boost pulling thru a 45mm HIF SU.

Yep, its going into the F-Vee as a play toy cum clubday car and mebbe a couple of hillclimbs just for laughs.

Since I have these straightcut 3rd & 4th gears laying about I might as well use them. Prolly wasting my time really but why the hell not?

I expect to see about 100 road wheel HP pushing less that 500 kilos so I imagine it would run out of revs pretty quickly using a 4.1 diff which will
go in in the interim.
I may even simply lock (weld) up the diff altogether rather than mess with pricey and rare(ish) LSD's. Its just a play thing remember.

Secondly, I will be using 14" Porsche wheels with more road going tyres on the thing sos I dont have to mess with stripping and remounting the Vee
tyres.
I dont yet know what type or size of tyre as yet so the rolling circumference may be a bit smaller than the RA500 Bridgestones Im racing on now.

I have got as tough 200mm clutch made for this turbo thing so it may be a bit more than a dab, more like a stomp, but the stock 180mm clutch is light
as!
