Dual Cab - Subaru Powered - Kombi
Well after many months of planning and researching and changing my mind I have finally finished my EJ 22 Conversion on the Dual Cab kombi I picked up
a few months back. Although the body is far from finished and needs the rust removed and a respray it is a work in progress.
After driving her home this arvo and pulling up Samford range in 4th gear as 80 kmph with ease I can happliy say .. I love it .... mmm SUBI POWER
!!!
The Conversion was done using the new Custom Offroad Conversion kit which has been specifically designed to fit the EJ 22 into the bay window kombi.
Makes the entire job not only very easy but also look real good.
Custom 16 Mags wrapped in 215 x 65 x 16 Desert Duellers. I will lower it a few inches later on.
The radiator is loacted underneath and is a custom unit supplied by Custom Offroad. It runs 2 x 12 " thermos in a custom suround. Profile is good and
cooling seems fine thus far.
The shrouds are louvered to get air flow and keep the profile low. All water lines are high grade suction pipe with hydraulic clamps.
The engine is an EJ 22 which is a 2.2L Twin cam EFI engine from a Subaru Liberty. mmm Fuel Injection ... Although not completed in this picture you
can see the inverted throttle body and the Custom Header tank.
The big down side to any Subi Conversion is the lack of ground clearance. With a Custom Offroad SUmp and cross member kit this is no longer a problem.
Sitting 85mm shorter you get back to almost factory clearance.
Custom Exhaust also keeps it neat a and tight.
Walla a car with not only character but a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

Full respray and rust removal

Air con will be using twin condensors for the a/c on either side.
Time will tell if the cooling works. Driving to Melbourne Wednesday should test it :>

i think brad offers a drive in and out deal of around 9 grand for the EJ22 very reasonable when u add all the costs together!!!!
if you think about it type 4 rebuild will be about 4-5 grand and if you was to make an engine put out as much horsepower as the suby u would loose
reliablaity as well as cost!!
i too plan on doing it!!

Drive in / Out is $8800
We will also soon have a complete DIY kit. DIY kit has Kit A, B, and C.
Kit A - This gives you everything you need to put an EJ 22 into your kombi. By this I mean you buy you EJ Engine pack sit it in your shed. Buy Kit A
and put it next to it. Then drive your kombi in and bolt the EJ 22 into your kombi using all the parts contained in the kit and NOTHING ELSE ...
That’s right I mean nothing. Very much like IKEA.
Kit B - Same as kit A but has the EJ22 in it and is ready to bolt in unit, fully setup with new belts, idlers, seals, sump on, loom ready, exhaust on
etc etc. Sits on a pallet.
Kit C - Same as kit A or B but also includes all the tools you need to do the job, right down to the tech screw bit for you battery drill which is
also in the kit.
All kits come with complete instructions and parts in then can be purchased separately if you like.
Just installed cruise control .... must say it is very nice :>

mm You will find putting an EJ20T into a Kombi Van will be a PITA and in my opinion not worth the effort. The turbo setup and manifold will need to be
modified to clear the fuel tank, the sump is to deep and the headers stop you getting the ground clearance back.

Kit for beetles ? The kit will fit into a beetle, buggy, baja etc. The cooling will be different but to cool an EJ in a beetle you are going to have
to cut metal so there is no cooling kit planned at this stage as everything will need to be custom.

Price includes heating.
After spending a few weeks in Victoria now with the heater fitted I can happily say it works great.
The system I have in mine will shortly be availible from Custom Offroad as a bolt in, plump up. It fits up the front on top of the factory bash plate.
Once it is fitted you do not even know it is there. It is only one speed and puts the heat through the factory heater tubes. This means you can still
control it going to dash or feet.
It works well as you can use the fresh air controls to mix cool air with it giving you a nice cab temp. The reason we don't use a heater control as
such is due to the need of the EJ22 to have constant flow through its heater rails.
It is nice to have a heater that don't smell and always works well. Once I have the intergrated a/c in the kombi will have all the mod cons.
Average fuel consumption since I left Brisbane 3120 kms ago is 9.2
L per 100 km. Not to bad in my opinion since it is still a brick ..

hey guys, i saw this thing in person, and i was impressed with the work that brad and COR have done.
From a visual aspect you couldn't tell there was a subi engine under that tray.
and it seemed to accelorate up to traffic speed nicely too
on another note, Have you got and specs on the V6 conversion you guys done on the blue buggy.
This has my attension in a big way.

The V6 in the buggy was put in by Troy. We did the bar work, cooling and floor pan / suspension but Troy did the install, fixed the small issues you
get with a V6 in a manx and did the wiring himself.. Big thumbs up to him for thr effort.
Oh and we got it all engineered for him as we consulted the entire way through to make sure it would comply. Also went 4 wheel disc and landcruiser
mags.
