**Carb Quiz - What goes where?**


I'm installing a carb kit for my 34 Pict -3 and seem to be having a few troubles. I don't know what I've stuffed up but each time I install it the motor wont idle and starves for fuel needit it to be continually pumped for it the maintain fire in it's belly.

Have a look at the pics below and let me know you think I have done wrong.

Umm... Is number1 the main Jet?? Or have i got the wrong bit in here??
Not Sure about number6..It fits on the right of the carb
Number3.. the Co adjust..is the old one


Any suggestions???

hmmm Bronze,
Im no help at all, last time I played with my carby, it ended up at the mechanics!!!Lets hope you get a reply soon, cause its now 5:50 on Sunday, and it looks liek you might be walking to school tomorrow.

Bronze, there are always extra bits in these kits. They cover a few versions. Your carb looks the same as the one on my 1600 and the idle screw in the second pic with a ? beside it is not for this carb.

Just had another look at the pic and my carb , and were you have the screw going in, is a vacuum line on mine (two brass barbs actually) these have been blocked off on my carb with rubber sleeves. Is it possible that the screw on yours was there to block off the vacuum line. If it sucking heaps of air from a vacuum leak it will not run properly or idle.

Bronze, in your photo with the yellow paper

2 - is the float bowl drain plug. If you put a screw driver through that hole you will get to the main jet, which is not shown in your picture.

3 - this is your idle mixture screw. You should set it about 2.5 turns from the bottom as a ball park figure. once running, set the idle speed. Then screw the idle mixture screw in until the idle speed drops, then out to the idle speed drops. Now find the in between point that gave you the highest idle speed. this is what you want. Now readjust the idle speed (using 4) and recheck the mixture screw.

4 - idle speed screw. use this to set the idle speed. the screw on the throttle plate is only used for the choke idle speed plate to push on, it should normally have a small gap (it is called the throttle stop screw). the idle speed screw (4) is what you should use to set the idle speed.

5 - emulsion tube

6 - tiny plug

7 - idle jet. used to set the idle / low speed mixture.

1 - are you sure you pulled that off that carb?

the vacuum line for the distributor is behind the throttle stop screw in your pic.

the screw the pen is pointing to is just a block off. it is supposed to be blocked off.

the only thing that I can think 1 is, is maybe some sort of a weird home made adjustable main jet. Did it come from behind the float bowl drain plug? Did it have some wierd hollow pipe it screwed into?

If so you would have to try to reset it to the right position which would be almost impossible. You may need to source a real solex main-jet.

Bronze, do you have power hooked up to the idle cut off solenoid? If not that will give the symptoms you are describing.

Thanks Mattie. I posted about 3 and went to the movies with the wife. By the time I came out I had pretty much cooled down from putting it on and off about 7 times with the same result each time. I was prepared to walk to school this morning but the wife was gracious enought to run me to school. How ever will I live it down!

Dean (Grey 57) - Sound like you went to a bit of trouble for me mate. Thanks. I read on the intructions that the kit caters for 4 carbs with my model being the largest. It's quality kit but their photocopier on the day must have been borrowed from some ExGovt supplier. At least it wasn't written in Chinese. Some consilation.
Thats bad news that the '?' idle screw is the wrong one. I came from the kit and for some unknown reason the original has left the building as I must mark as absent because I cannot account for it. Perhaps one of the kids wanted it more than me.
I have a vacume pipe that is of course connected to the dizzy. Its a bit old but is working. The hose needs replacing and it's on the list.

Wes - Thanks for the reply. Yes I did extract the main jet from behind the plug. Initially I accidently replaced it with '6' the tiny plug. Knowing I stuffed up I replaced the tiny plug to where it need to be and the only other thing that fit the thread it the '1' one with the question mark meaning =
I have lost the main jet and need to get a replacement.
'1' didn't come off the carb but came with the kit and must be required for the the smaller carbs and not for the larger pict-3.
Thanks about the screw pluging that hole where the pen is- I was unsure it thats where it lived.

11CAB - That was one of the first things I checked because it would be an easy enough mistake to make. I could hear it go click when chandler flicked the ignition on. It would give me the symptoms I was suffering but it was working when power was supplied. Cheers - Good thinking as it would have been a hassle if that had decided to die during the rebuild.

I watched Dunebuggy pull down his carb and give it a clean and remember thinking to myself - I can do that. Now I know I can't. Well not with out hassles anyhow. I'll get the minister of procurement to source a new main jet tomorrow - being in Dubbo that should mean it will arrive about this time next week.

the best thing to do is run a decent air cleaner and fuel filter, that way your carb won't get crap in it and you won't need to rebuild it.

Prevention is better than cure.

No worries Bronze glad to help. Hope it all works out. Probably got the instruction sheet from when I rebuilt mine if it's any good to you.
The vacuum lines on mine that are blocked off, are for some vacuum motor on the air cleaner, hot cold running thing. I have fitted an earlier type oil bath unit , so these are not used. :)

Picked up my Main Jet today.


Thanks for you help chaps.

The Motor and Tranny come out over the next week or so to replace all the rubbers before the two easter weekends. Wish me luck.
